Lakes Weekend Autumn 2010

"These training weekends just get better and better!" Over 60 people took part in the latest Sale Harriers trip to The Newlands Adventure Centre near Keswick in The Lake District. Ages from 17 to 65 took part in many and varied activities from Ghyll scrambling to fell running with all levels of fitness catered for.

The weekend began for some people on Friday with varied runs around the local valley area. Saturday morning saw most runners battling through heavy rain along local roads for an early morning run. A hearty breakfast after hot showers refreshed the runners before a hill session in glorious sunshine. The session was enjoyed by all with a fun relay, with teams competing for top prizes.

After more highly nutritious food and good company, the afternoon was free for other activities. Some went for a gentle walk whilst the adrenalin junkies amongst the group gathered for a session of leaping down local waterfalls, known as Ghyll Scrambling. 20 odd (very odd) intrepid adventurers were kitted out in special equipment in order to attempt to manage an afternoon in near freezing temperatures. Apparently it is no 23 in the top things to do before you die list. Fantastic.

Another run took place before tea with many runners climbing 'Cat Bells' (over 450m) with fine views over Derwent Water.

A Bar b Que was planned for the evening but typical British weather brought us inside for the excellent food. The rest of the evening was taken up with tales of the days events enhanced with some liquid refreshment.

Sunday was bright and fine and one group of runners tackled the Anniversary Waltz fell race route up Causey Pike, climbing over 7000 feet of steep terrain and nearly 3 hours of running. Another group ran around Derwent Water taking in the beautiful views and stunning scenery (11miles).

Thanks to all who helped in the organisation and planning of the event and the next one is planned for March 2011.
