Sale Harriers have hosted the Sale 10 for many years with many
fine achievements.
Gone are the days when a Sunday morning would see empty roads
with little or no traffic. Modern day road race routes are
restricted to areas where contact with main roads is kept to a
minimum. The current route consists of 4 laps with most of the
running done within traffic free Wythenshawe Park. The race
attracted a large and varied cross section of Sale Harriers and
other runners from across the region and beyond.

The race was won by Edwin Kiporir from Kenya
with a time of 47:52 which was only 7 seconds outside the course
record. First lady also from Kenya in 58:12.
20 Sale Harriers took part in the event this year with relative
newcomer Andy Mooney coming in first with a time
of 1:00:36. He said he had hoped to break the hour but felt tired
towards the end. Next was Matt Wansbone with
1:02:20 followed by Gary Willcock with 1:03:06
V45. He was slightly slower than last year when he did 1:01:58.
Tim Rainey, our high mileage specialist got a
PB with 1:03:49, 1 minute 19 seconds improvement on previous 10
milers. This of course was after 13 miles on Saturday and a 5k race
on thursday. Richard Wilson was next counter with
1:04:10. Alan Pitman, another newcomer, had a good
run with 1:06:08. We're looking forward to some great improvement
over the next few years.
Next came Jim Lambe with a time he should be
very pleased with. 1:06:41. A pb by over 6 minutes
(2008) bodes well for his Helsinki marathon on August 14th.
Good luck Jim!
The pbs continued thick and fast with Tim Brett
managing 2 in one week. His best ever time of 18:42 in Sizzler
number 3 followed by 1:07:37 for 10 miles. His proud children
Charlie and Izzy put their energy
into helping on the drinks station.
First Sale lady with 1:10:00 was Rose Blackburn
with another pb by 6 minutes. Next came John
Battersby who has usually got some injury excuse but today
ran well to get 1:11:35 and takes the prize for
running more Sale 10s than anyone else, chased in by
Jan Nichols (3rd lady 40) 1:11:51 and
Jerry Smith (4th vet 55) 1:11:57 not as fast as
last year.
The familiar face of Geof Beattie came next
with 1:15:16 despite complaining of pain in his shoulder and hand
following a fall during a parkrun in Platt Fields. Next came
newcomer Dave Brookes looking like there is more
to come with 1:16:16.
Laren Davies took over 5 minutes off her time
from last year with 1:22:40 and Katie Reece was
not far behind with 1:24:23. Katie is training hard for her
Abingdon Marathon in October. Good luck Katie. Audrey
Gresty continues to improve her times knocking 7 minutes
off her times in 2 years. This year she was 5 minutes faster than
last year with 1:25:54. Her friend and running partner Dawn
Holding had to pull out due to ill health. Brian
Bradshaw has also continued to improve with 1:30:36.
Jonathan Hardman did 1:39:02.
As usual Sale Harriers managed to put on a great race and the
usual thanks goes out to Morris Jefferson and his
loyal band of volunteers who had to get up very early to make sure
the event ran smoothly.
