European Champion Clubs' Cup
Sale Harriers' Senior Women's team travel to Bern, Switzerland on the weekend of May 30th for the European Champion Clubs' Cup, the annual competition that pits the continent's best club teams against each other. The team travel for the second year in succession after winning last year's UK women's league once again, and hope to improve on last years Group B 3rd place. A top two finish will see next year's British entrants (hopefully Sale Harriers, yet again), compete in the A Group against the true elite, but for now, the team faces the challenge of teams from Denmark, Israel, Bosnia, the Netherlands and Switzerland, and like the men's team of 2008, the women will be looking to win.
The team itself looks strong, with a range of internationals in its ranks. The in-form Katherine Endacott goes in the 100m, while Shaunna Thompson, fresh from a speedy outing in the Manchester street athletics meeting goes in the 200m. Canadian hurdler Andrea Vinet will be looking to replicate her victory of last season, while the likes of Alison Rodger, Sarah Holt, Abigail Haywood, Laura Whittingham and Abigail Irozuru look to be a formidable prospect in the field events.
It's not only Manchester United & Chelsea that represent British Clubs in Europe competition!). The club has won an unprecedented twenty-three Premier League championship victories in about thirty years that has qualified them to their thirty-sixth championship at either senior or junior level. The junior teams have won the European T & F Cup three times and the senior women have been runners-up in two cross-country championships and won bronze medals in one.
