English Schools Cross Country Champs
ENGLISH SCHOOLS XC CHAMPIONSHIPS.
The venue for this year's English Schools Cross-Country Championships was the imposing Woolaton Hall with its commanding presence on a small hill with tree lined avenues leading the eye towards it. After a dry March the course was in excellent condition for a fast run in contrast to the mud of Alton Towers the month before. For those under eighteen, this national championship was likely to be the highlight of their cross country season and for those in the upper ages, the championship would be the main target of their training. The club had athletes in all age groups competing for different counties.
The bulk of our representatives had qualified on a windswept weekend in early February at their County schools event with Greater Manchester claiming the majority of our youngsters. Adam Roden (Derbyshire ) Bradley Yates (Lancs) and Christy O'Brien (GM) were at the lower end of the age group , so for them it was their first experience and probably not the last at this event. Flora Whyte also had a good run in the junior girl's section.
In the Intermediate Girls we had Abi Fitton (GM.) It was in the Intermediate Boys where we had most success with Ryan Moore leading the way in 13th with Chris McGahan a respectable 86th for a boy who prefers shorter distances on the track and Kyle Conway, all of them counters in the winning age group team lifting the Yorkshire Cup.
Finally in the Senior Boys race Callum Greenwood had another very good run showing the progress he has made this winter coming 15th and lifting the Liverpool Trophy for overall best team. Callum Rowlinson also had a good run in this senior section. All these athletes train with the talented squad assembled by Paul Roden, except Bradley.
