Olympic Trials – Dennison Selected
The pinnacle of the domestic T & F season was this weekend's Aviva Olympic Trials at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium. With over 800 athletes and a close to capacity crowd for Saturday and Sunday, they became the largest trials in British athletics history, and the largest British trials of any Olympic sport this year. Sale Harriers had its portion of best athletes contribute to the weekend of pulsating track and field action.
Congratulations to pole vaulter Kate Dennison who booked her ticket to London 2012 and her second Olympic Games by winning the silver medal behind Holly Bleasdale who again broke the national record. Congratulations also to club coach Julien Rafelli, who's taken Holly to this magnificent pinnacle of her career. He also coaches Andy Sutcliffe who had the finest vault of his career to win his first senior silver medal in a PB of 5:35. Weather conditions may have prevented him also achieving the qualifying standard but good luck as he has his final attempt at the European championships in Helsinki next weekend.
Congratulations also to Alex Smith whose 74.03m hammer throw not only won his the national title but he achieved the Olympic 'B' Standard but will also have to hold his breath to see if he's also selected for London 2012. Another person having to keep her fingers crossed is our javelin thrower Laura Whittingham who also won the silver medal.
Andy Turner (110m) had a disappointing race for the bronze medal. He's already got the qualifying standard but will have to remain on the sidelines to await confirmation. Likewise our long jumper Abigail Irozuru who achieved the qualifying standard a week earlier in a magical PB leap but only managed fourth at the these trials. She's off to the European championships this weekend also to demonstrate her worthiness for selection. The club extends best wishes to all of them and hope their life's dream come true.
Finally, congratulations to Kirsty Law who won bronze in her specialist event, the discus
