On Monday 30th July at 10 o'clock 52 young people aged 8 to 14 arrived at Crossford Bridge for the first 2012 Star Track week. Several were members of Sale Harriers but at least half were going to experience a week of athletic fun and enjoyment aimed at their age groups and presented by Ann Marshall and her team of experienced coaches.
Divided by age into training groups, the young people with their group coach and helper were coached in sprints, hurdles, shot, discus, javelin, high jump, long jump, triple jump and 800m during Monday to Thursday. They then tried each of these events resulting in them having a list of personal bests.
On the Friday, the flags of many nations were displayed and the group of youngsters were divided into teams representing Great Britain, Jamaica and Canada and they all took part in an Olympic event. They also had the opportunity of holding an Olympic torch loaned by Sale Harrier coach Keith Hunter.
Each youngster was given a Star Track T shirt, goodie bag, personal best list and either a gold, silver or bronze medal at the end of a busy week. The second week starting on Monday 13th August is already oversubscribed with Ann reporting that nearly 80 children are booked in, let's hope it stays dry.
