Triumph In Sheffield
This weekend at the Northern 4 stage Cross Country relays in Graves Park in Sheffield.
Sale sent a couple of strong teams with the aim of challenging for the championship and were rewarded with 1st place and a very credible 4th from a promising young B team.
This event is still in it's infancy after being established in 2010 with Sale sending its first team last year where they finished 7th. This year on first leg for the A team was Niall Brooks, for the B team Ryan Moore and the C team Chris Middleton. Niall came in in 1st place with Ryan in 2nd a further 10 seconds back on the hilly 2 mile course, with Chris coming back in 14th place. Off on second leg was Simon Horsfield, Callum Greenwood and Dillon Bezzina. Simon ran a brisk leg and kept the A team in 1st place with Callum dropping a few place to 5th, although after turning his ankle earlier in the week he performed well while clearly in discomfort. Dillon ran a solid leg and brought the C team in 21st place.
Charlie Hulson, Ryan Worland and a second leg from Ryan Moore were the 3rd leg runners. Charlie put in a promising performance and extended the lead over 2nd place Leeds to 16 seconds, Ryan Worland gained a place for the B team coming in in 4th with Ryan Moore picking up 9 places to bring in the C team in 12th place. For the final leg James Bailey was tasked with maintaining the lead, Luke Betts was looking to make up time on the 3rd placed runner and Chris Middleton, on his second leg, to make up as many places as possible. Luckily James did not disappoint and brought the team home for Gold, with Leeds second. Luke, who recently joined the club, was unfortunately not able to make up time on 3rd placed Derby but still came home in a very credible 4th. Chris rounded off the event finishing the C team in 11th place.
This will hopefully be the start of more medals on the country later this year.
