Great Manchester Weekend
Everyone surely knows of Manchester's sporting weekend with much of it televised. Sale Harriers was involved in every nook and cranny from poor old Andy Turner dropping out the 200m hurdles down Deansgate to Andy Sutcliffe vaulting high (5.25m) outside the Town Hall with coach Matt Cullen in attendance (spotted on TV); to officials like Club Chairman David Brown who again was chief starter with Fabrice Muamba setting off the 40,000 runners; to marshals who lined the route along Bridgewater way and at Sportcity for the Gt.Junior Run to the large number from aged 7 to 70 who ran their hearts out in the GMR or at Sportcity in the Gt. Junior Run.
Some of the outstanding performances of the weekend came from the club's youngster section in the Great Junior Run where we recorded three race winners among the thousands who took part. You should have seen their trophies... as big as themselves and awarded by the world's greatest runners who'd dominated the 10k race the previous day.
In the year 7/8 race, congratulations to Thomas Boyd who won superbly with Joel Stringer 3rd and with his sister Katie also a magnificent 2nd in the girls race. In the year 9/10 girl's race, Lizzie Twite won by a 'mile'. Lizzie has won several junior run trophies and in 2011 made a clean sweep of victories at Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield. Among the 11/12 year olds Beth Thornton was runner-up with Francesaca Brint 5th. In the 13/15 age-group Flora Whyte was the club's 3rd superb winner and achieved a magnificent new pinnacle in her athletic career with Amber Towns 3rd.
Well done to all of them and just rewards for all their hard, committed training. If your performance in the GMR 10k is not recorded or commented on as a PB, SB or PW etc., it's either because you did not submit the information for the website or because the Great Runs result service is notoriously unhelpful apparently recording in its 'club' searches only those who've entered through 'normal' routes and not those who've entered as 'elite' 'celebrity' 'complimentary' and other routes. It's still not too late! You can belatedly submit them and this report will be updated. Among the 40000, therefore, who thronged the streets of Manchester, we had............
