The World Trials
The hottest weekend of 2013 will be remembered for some scintillating athletics action at the World trials at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. With just 28 days to go until the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, it wasn't just national titles at stake so it was great to see many Sale vests mixing it with the nation's best with some even winning national medals. Sale had no less than 26 athletes compete over the three days.
Our World class sprinter Andy Robertson, based in Bath, moved his career onto another exciting level with superb performances, all witnessed on TV. In the 100m final, he came 3rd with a lifetime best of 10.14 not far off Dwain Chambers who took his seventh title. Javelin thrower Rosie Semenytsh had waited a long time to become a British champion and she finally made it at the weekend. Congratulations also to the club's Scottish multi discus champion, Kirsty Law who added the British Championships silver medal to her collection. Our Olympian, Commonwealth Games silver medallist and multi national title hammer thrower Alex Smith was below par but still won the silver medal with Mike Floyd, the club 12 times Northern Champion in fourth place. Congratulations also to Nick Gayle who won bronze in the 110m hurdles. We must also congratulate Norman Poole trained Michael Rimmer (L'pool Pembroke) who trains at our Wythenshawe site who achieved his 6th 800m British title to secure his seat on the plane to Moscow.
There were also several fantastic lifetime best performances. Abigayle Fitzpatrick had every reason to be delighted. Out 400m hurdler has been in superb form all summer and capped her year two fantastic PB's in both the heats and final. Kirsten McAslan (400m) has also been in superb form through the summer and there's nothing better than a PB to prove this. Kelly Massey entered the championships late after her fine SB at the UKWAL match the precious weekend. What a pity she just missed out on the bronze medal with another SB. Well done to Abigayle Haywood who also produced a season's best to finish just outside the medals
