ON ROADS & FELLS
The endurance section was as active last week as any other with members competing in all sorts of distances over all terrains individually and in groups. The major event reported in was the club promotion of the second............
Sale 5k Sizzler at Wythenshawe Park. It was another superb event and thanks to everyone for either their participation or help as volunteers. With an amazing 400 finishers the total so far is a Sizzler record. Also a real confidence builder is how the promised 'tweaking' of the finish zone produced a completely problem free night assuring doubters of over capacity for the future. On a very hot and humid night, times were inevitably affected. Whereas in the first Sizzler over 50% of Sale Harriers did PB's, the vast majority were seconds slower. Of the large numbers who ran last time, only five Sale Harriers were slightly faster. Well. Onwards to number 3 on August 1stand then the Northern 5k Championships in the 'Run with Olympians 5k" on August 15th.
The other endurance event of the weekend was the section's club championship running the Crowden Horshoe Fell race. Organizer Paul Barrett wrote, "The Men's team took the team prize with Chris Donnelly second individually! The latest rankings excel file can be viewed by clicking the link 'League Results'. Note that the next race in the series is the final Sizzler 5k on August 15th.
Veteran team manager Jerry Smith was one of a group who ran the inaugural Arley Hall half marathon. He wrote in, "This is a new local race in the calendar and a small group turned out to give it a try. Fortunately we were spared the blazing hot conditions of the last few days and it proved to be a very pleasant and well-run event on an attractive course round the lanes of Cheshire. Everyone agreed we were all a bit lacking in mileage and so we individually decided to treat the race as a training run rather than an all-out PB attempt. With that in mind all were pleased with their times on the day which were:Robbie Greenslade 1.36.18, Jerry Smith 1.37.41, Lauren Davies 1.45.49,Ranjit Bennett 2.04.45 and Jenny Miles 2.08.44
