NORTHERN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPS 2014
The 2014 North of England Cross Country Championships were held at a rather muddy Knowsley Safari Park, on a day where Sale struggled to find their usual high medal haul. Uncharactistically Sale's highest individual finish on the day went to Lucy O'Gorman who finished 6th in Senior Women category, while youngster Bethany Thornton, had a fantastic race, to finish 8th in the U13 girls. However that would be it for top 10 finishes on the day.
The Under 15 boys team made up of Jake Spilsbury (19th), Adam Spilsbury (23rd), Charlie Brett (33rd) and Adam Kinghorn (51st) comfortably won Silver, while the Under 17 Men's team of Adam Roden (15th), Euan Gilchrist (22nd), Christy O'Brien (33rd) and Matthew Beacock (51st) narrowly took Bronze, just 6 points ahead of Derby who placed 4th. The Under 15 girls were very unfortunate to just loose out on a very closely fought battle for the Bronze team medal, with just 11 points seperating 3rd to 6th position, taking 4th.
The senior men were led home, as has been often the case, by Gareth Raven, in 37th. Gareth actually led the team home also at these same championships one decade ago, and has been an ever-present character in the SHM men's team in this time. He was accompanied by Gavin Hill (45th), James Wignall (47th), David Marsh (139th), Chris Donnelly (152nd) and Mike Ashby (181st) to finish 8th in the team ranks. Andrew Mooney, Paul Barrett, Ian Jones, Kevin Foster and Carl Barber were also out in Green of Sale Harriers Manchester.
In the women, Lucy O'Gorman was first back for SHM finishing 6th, with Julie Price (76th), Kathy Wellam (83rd) and Jan Nicholls (85th) racing home to place the Senior Women's team 6th. Hayley Cavill, Helen Armitage and Catherine Jones weren't far behind!
The junior races saw neither the men's or women's section finish a complete squad with Luke Betts (15th) and Alex Bradford (57th), representing the men, while Imani Modahl in 24th the only representative for the junior women.
As previously mentioned the Under 17 men managed to take the bronze medal courtesy of Roden, Gilchrist, O'Brien and Beacock, with a mention for Daniel Brint and Brad Thornton who also finished. The women of the under 17 category finished an agonising 4th, Aimee Pratt led home the squad of seven, finishing 22nd. Rachel Hibberd (48th), Amber Towns, (53rd) and Mattie Yates (64th) completed the scoring team, while Hannah Christy, Madeline Hole and Hannah Simeen followed them home.
The Under 15 division were arguably the most successful age group of the day for Sale, with the boys taking 2nd team, and the girl's ever-so-closely missed bronze medals by just three points. J. Spilsbury, A. Spilsbury, Brett and Kinghorn were accompanied by Dylan Burchill (86th) in the boys section, and Olivia Green (28th), Ciara Lydon (34th), Alexa McTiffin (36th) and Danielle Stringer (58th) were the finishing team, with great efforts by Francesca Brint, Zara Thompson and Alice Bruce also finished the tough conditions.
And last, but never least, the U13 boys category unfortunately were unable to finish a team, but great individual efforts from youngsters Harry Boyd (63rd), Tom Barratt (92nd) and Oliver Dean (113th) represented the guys, while Bethany Thornton, in a fine individual effort in 8th, led home the 9th placed under 13 girls, with Tess McHugh (63rd), Josie Canham (73rd) and Georgie Haworth (107) and Elizabeth Twite 115th).
Attention now turns to next month's National Cross Country championships, in Nottingham.
