TWO NATIONAL RECORDS
Sale Harriers had its best ever performance in the Tom Pink AAA Relays at Sportcity on Wednesday last. They set two national records; won five events and gained 23 prestigious AAA gold medals. They broke national records which were previously set by Sale teams two years ago. The events, which aim to challenge Mo Farah’s and Paula Radcliffe’s National 5000m records (12:53.11 and 14.29.11), were held on the indoor track creating an incredible atmosphere and our youngsters rose to the occasion. In the U16 5000m continuous relay, we broke National records with a boy’s team Dylan Burchill, Adam Spilsbury, Jake Spilsbury, Adam Kinghorn, and Luke Chesters recording 12 minutes 5 seconds. Not to be outdone, our girl’s team of Meg Mc Hugh, Tess Mc Hugh, Beth Thornton, Ellie Twite and Niamh Nugent recorded 13 minutes 30 seconds to also break the national record.
Our most successful team was the U14 girls where Niamh Nugent, Beth Thornton and Tess Mc Hugh won the 3 x 500m relay by a huge margin and then teamed up with Ruby Bell to win the sprint relay.
Our U12 girl’s team of Kia-Licia Clarkson, Libby Hill and Ruby Bell were clear winners of the 3 x 500m relay due to a storming last leg by Ruby. Libby was the youngest Sale athlete taking part and also won AAA bronze medal in the sprint relay and Med-Ball Challenge, amazing the spectators with her speed, strength and endurance. Ruby, who was the youngest triple gold medallist, had also shown her versality by winning the long jump at the Trafford medal meet two days before. Both Ruby and Libby are both a credit to their coaching at Crossford Bridge.
Other Sale gold medallists at the Trafford meeting were Laurelle Obi, Meg Mc Hugh and Emma Lowe with two golds each. Silver medals were awarded to Niamh Coyne, Charlotte Mairs, Mia Gibbons, Tess Mc Hugh, Jack Daly, Amy Lester and Nathan Booth whilst Ami Page, Dane Winchcole and Beth Thornton were bronze medallists. Although outside the medals, Taylor Edwards and Francesca Brint both ran impressive new PB’s.
Results from the Trafford Open meeting are available on the Trafford AC website. Special thanks as ever to club photographer Ernie Greenwood. Further photos can be viewed and purchased from his website http://www.darkstarphotos.com
