ENGLAND U23 & U20 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Fechin Mc Cormick
This major National championship, traditionally held in Bedford, was an important one for several club athletes. For the lower age-group, the championship incorporated the UK trials for the World Junior Championships in Oregon.
Club athletes won one gold medal, one silver medal and two bronze medals.
Our gold medallist, Ben Williams is a club newcomer (Welcome!) and a former World Youth triple jump champion. His was one of the standout performers in the jumps. His 16.31 triple jump exceeded his outdoor best of 16.09m that dated back to 2009. He won the under 23 event by 85 cm to take the national title.
Charlie Hulson won his first major track England medal in the 5000m in 14:36.98 not far short of his PB of 14:33 achieved at the BAL match on June 7th. This is his latest in a successful summer in which he’s improved his 1500m PB to 3:48.18 at the BMC at Sportcity and his 3k to 8:14 at Stretford Grand Prix in May.
Two club newcomers Jack Crabtree (U20 3000m) and Matthew Sumner (U23 400m hurdles) were the club’s silver medallists. Well done to them!
Others also had the race of their lives and also every reason to be delighted. Luke Betts finished 4th in the 800m with a new PB of 1:51.11. Likewise U23 Jack Seddon who recorded a 100m PB in his heats and Amy Pratt, the only U17 girl in the U20 race, recorded a well-deserved 3000m steeplechase lifetime best of 11:29.83
