NORTH CHESHIRE 5 x 5K GRAND PRIX
Fechin Mc Cormick
These five races run in Dunham Massey Country Park and through picturesque North Cheshire villages are the traditional precursor to the 4 x 5k Sale Sizzlers. This year they were not without organizational hiccups highlighting the increasing challenges that race organiser’s face. Let’s hope this popular series will not be changed beyond recognition next year.
Twenty-eight club members ran at least one race with most doing two or more. The club’s three fastest men of the series were Peter Crawford who clocked a tremendous long overdue PB of 16:51 at Hollins Green to finish 6th; junior Matt Beacock who’s made massive improvement from last year’s Sizzlers with a two minute improvement on the Dunham Massey course for a new PB of 16:48 and Andy Mooney who was a classy 17.12 at Bowden to record a new PB by five seconds.
Among our ladies, our front three were fast improving Sarah Douglas who cracked the twenty minute barrier for the first time and did it in three races with a best of 19:50 at the second Dunham Massey; as ever L55 Jackie Cordingley was way out in front in her age-category and easily won her category at both Dunham races and at the Lymn 5k and L35 Helen Armitage (19:24) continued her fine current form with her fastest 5k since she set her PB of 19.02 in 2006
Robbie Greenslade has every reason to be pleased and to be assured his training is going in the right direction. He ran the series faster than last year, quite an achievement so soon after the Manchester marathon. Likewise M50 Francis Sweeney who ran the London Marathon and broke through the 19 minute barrier for the first time with 18.20 at Hollins Green. Michael Wymer is much more familiar with Saturday morning Parkrun 5k’s but all his three evening races were faster with a best of 20:26 at Dunham Massey.
Others who recorded pleasing PB’s were junior Dennis Powell who dipped under nineteen minutes for the first time with 18:48 at Dunham Massey, Carl Cleghorn (18:57 at Hollins Green); L35 Jenny Clink (22:59 at Bowden) , M50 Martin Smedley (22:43 at Dunham Massey) and Paul Davis (18:38 at Hollins Green).
Well done to all! Onwards now to ...........................The Sizzlers!
