A HOT SIZZLER
FECHIN Mc CORMICK
It wasn’t just 440 finishers – forty more than last time, that make Thursday’s second Sizzler another great success. The collective moan of a strong breeze in the first Sizzler was replaced by hot, humid conditions but it did not seem to adversely affect the results for most. Mohammed Aburezeq (Altrincham & Dist AC) again flew off from the gun and quickly opened a 50m gap that was never bridged. He ran faster than in the first Sizzler and came within four seconds of breaking the course record. His Altrincham colleagues in the chasing group - Matt Barnes (14:56) recorded a much faster time and with Andy Norman (15.08) the trio easily won the £100 bonus for three dipping under the aggregate 45 minutes. Last year, they won it by just a second. Among the women, Jess Coulson (Stockport AC) was absent but the leading lady was another classy run by Claire Duck (Leeds City).
Thirty turned out for Sale on this occasion compared to forty-three in the first race with Mike Kilmartin (16.05) the first home reversing positions with Dave Marsh (16:48) from the first race. Interestingly, the vast majority of club members improved their times over Sizzler 1. Mike Kilmartin was forty seconds faster to record a new PB from last year’s Sizzler; M40 Carl Barber (16.58) was fifteen seconds faster, Peter O’Neill nine seconds and another PB; Andrew Carlin (17.27) was fifteen seconds faster with another PB; Glen Savage (17:56) was fifteen seconds faster and a PB over his 2011 Sizzler; Gareth Miller (18:22) was two seconds faster with another PB; Katie White (18:21) was three seconds faster; Steveland Surridge (19.42) was 12 seconds faster; M60 Nigel Fielden (20:11) was fifteen seconds faster, Mike Wymer (20:43) recorded another PB, M60 Geoff Beattie (22.46) was eight seconds faster and Tim Rainey (23.23) was one second faster. Well done to all.
Other noteworthy performers were Nicholas Whittle (16.52) who improved his PB from last year’s Sizzler PB by a whopping twenty seconds; Rupert Liddington (17:37) and 400m specialist David Allinson (20.21) made their Sizzler debut; Aidan Raftery (18:49) won the M55 category and Denis Pond (19:51) won the U20 category.
Again, thanks to everyone to helped in any way - Oliver Gaillemin for the sacrifices he made to be the race doctor; the team of marshals; the brilliant team of timekeepers and finish area officials, those considerate enough to help put things away after the race; Frank Cordingley for sorting out the race clock etc etc. It would be impossible without you..
Remember the series this year is aiming to raise at least £2000 for St. Ann’s Hospice that requires £16,000 a day just to keep going. You can help by donating to their collection buckets; buying bulk flapjacks and running for them (which if you do, you get free entry).
We also thank the sponsors especially Focused Nutrition for their sponsorship of the very healthy flapjacks. We’re asking all of you , please, to log onto www.sizzlerbars.co.uk; (this address is on every flapjack) and have a look at the health tips provided there and consider purchasing the exceptional offer of 30 bars for just £5 (RRP £20.00) .
We push ahead to the remaining two culminating with the Northern 5k championships on August 14th. Please continue to promote it every way you can....until we achieve that magical 500 finishers.
