NORTHERN LEAGUE MATCH 4
The Northern Premier League’s fourth and final match of the season came a close in windy Blackpool on Saturday. Wakefield came out champions with Sale (competing as City of Manchester) runners up, the same places as 2013. Final league result was as follows: -
Wakefield Harriers 18pts
Sale Harriers 16pts
The season had its ups and downs (mainly downs), though those that supported the club were magnificent. There were superb individual performances, highlighted by Josh Mouland, who ran, jumped and threw all day, indeed all season. Lee Whiteley came out of his comfort zone and tackled the 400m hurdles clocking a winning time of 58.6s. Most inspiring of all however were the women’s sprinters. Rebekah Wilson, Zavia Hill, Tyra Watson, Olivia Callaghan and Jenny Simmons who, following their individual successes, organized themselves into a formidable relay squad winning the 4x100 and 4x400 races in impressive style. The men were dominant all season, featuring heavily in the sprints, jumps and throws.
The downside of the season was the lack of a woman’s team manager, unacceptable late minute withdrawals (5 within 24hrs of this match) and far too many gaps in the middle distance events.
Unfortunately, all the individual successes have been threatened quite forcibly by the league as many of our athletes are not registered with England Athletics with disqualification of results imminent and relegation possible if not corrected. Can each athlete that has competed this year in the Northern League check they are fully up to date with their subscriptions. April 1st is when they were due, and despite constant letters and reminders it is inconceivable so many are outstanding.
Once again many thanks to Brian Spriggs and his merry team of officials, who contribute 30 points a fixture to the score. Full results can be found on the Power of 10.
Special thanks also to photographs Allan Wort and Tim Doggett – parents of two club athletes, who have provided a number of photos for both the website and the next Harrier magazine.
