HAROLD WILSON CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
As we draw into the winter season and sadly the end of the year, we are also nearing the finale of the endurance section’s club championships. This year, we changed the rules slightly to make it more competitive and inclusive. Athletes only have to complete a minimum of 8 races with their best 8 being used for the championship. There was also a cash incentive to those who competed in all 12.
To date, there have been 10 races, with the last two to come. These are the Gin Pit race in Tyldesley on 12th October and the 3rd Greater Manchester League XC in Heaton Park on 6th December at Boggart Hole Clough.
In the senior men’s championships, Nigel Martin has the trophy sewn up with an unassailable lead of 45 points, however 2nd and 3rd positions are all up for grabs with Paul Barrett, Steve McCarron, John Mosley and Chris Donnelly all looking at securing a top 3 finish.
The Vet men’s title is very exciting. Mike Hatch leads Elton Davies by a mere 4 points. Elton can win it, however he must compete in the next two races and hope to gain enough points to turn over the deficit. Failure to do so would result in Mike winning the title. Third place is anyone’s too, with Jerry Smith, Olivier Gaillemin, Frank Cordingley and Simon Bond able to snatch it.
Like the senior men, the senior women’s title will be won by last year’s champion, Sarah Douglas as she now has an unassailable lead of over 70 points. The veteran ladies will go down to the wire. Jackie Cordingley currently leads however this could be surrendered if Anne Chinnoy competes in the remaining two races.
