THE BOSTON MARATHON
This was my second marathon, having run 3:05 at Manchester last year. With a solid block of training and a 1:24 Wilmslow Half behind me I would've been confident of going sub-3hrs at any other marathon except Boston with its unique course profile. A steady headwind and rain showers also added to the challenge. Adhering to all the pre-race advice, a patient first half gave me a 1:29:18 split feeling fresh but with no margin for error either and the notorious Newton hills still to be tackled. Made to work hard through miles 16-21, leaked another 30secs over Heartbreak Hill and knew I'd have to empty myself over the remaining 5 miles to stay on target. A final rain-saturated sprint down Boylston St saw me cross the line in 2:59:19...soaked and shivering but smiling!
