YDL (Lower) (1) Sheffield.
Sale Harriers U13 & U15 boys and girls started the 2015 season as YDL National Premier League Champions and seeking to win their 8th consecutive Northern Premier League title in nine years.
Their first match of the Northern League at Sheffield resulted in the club’s 45th match win (out of 51 matches) since the league began in 2004. Apart from many outstanding individual performances, the most impressive feature of this match was the club’s ability to turn-out a team of 80 athletes to contest all the 100 events with no damaging ‘gaps’ other than lacking an U15 boy’s pole vaulter. Great credit is due to the team managers CARL WORTHINGTON and DAVE MARSH.
The club’s star athlete in the U13 boy’s was ADAM BAGUMA with four event wins in sprints, long jump and relay. Other individual victors were SAM WORTHINGTON, CHARLIE WATSON, ZENON CAIN and NEO IVANOVIC-BROWN. CHARLIE HOBSON and JOEL STRTINGER recorded PB’s in middle distance events whilst RORY KINRADE teamed up with Adam, Sam and Charlie Watson to win the sprint relay by a massive three seconds.
In the U13 girl’s event, ANNA KERSHAW (Hurdles) and PENNY TOWNSEND (Long jump), both won their ‘A’ events in PB’s. Anna teamed up with TYLER HILL, KATIE BIRD and POPPY DASBY-SEDDON to win the sprint relay. Further victories came from RUBY BELL, LARA CRAWFORD and AYLA HEWITT.
In the U15 girl’s event, LAURELLE OBI won both sprint events whilst TESS Mc HUGH was also victorious in two events including a super fast 300m. ELLIE JACKSON was most impressive in all of her four events which included a hurdles victory against a quality field. Other impressive individual victories were RUKA SHONIBARE, LOIS Mc TIFFIN, DEVON WEYMONT and VICTORIA BARLOW.
The best performances of the day came from SHANE CONNELL who won the U15 high jump with 1.79m. LUKE CHESTERS (800m) and MICHAEL ODEJIMI (300m) both won their events and then teamed up with DANIEL AFOLABI, D’MELCO SWEENEY, RHYS PARKER, DAPO OLAREWAJU and SAM EBONINE to finish a close second in both relays
A successful team is much more than those performing athletes. It’s also about those ‘backroom’ people of team managers who work tirelessly to ensure the team’s success; the essential officials who also win valuable team points for their attendance and there’s those doting parents who make so many sacrifices. Thanks on this occasion also to CARL WORTHINGTON for his photos from this match
