BAL 2 & EUROPEAN CUP
Firstly, many thanks to those who competed and team managed at the BAL match that took place at Lee Valley on June 6th. In another hard fought fixture a depleted SHM team finished 5th, just 24 points behind 2nd place. There were some fine performances and a lot of effort, particularly from our multi-eventers JACK ANDREW and ALEX WORT. It was a team performance, but special mentions go to MATT SUMNER, RIMAS MARTISAUSKAS and ANDY SUTCLIFFE, our only A string winners, and DWAYNE COWAN, CHRIS BAKER and ALEX SMITH, who took second places. It was also great to see the return from long-term injury of Matt Bond, although, of course, everyone contributed.
The third match of the season takes place on July 11th in the inconvenient location of Glasgow. We currently lie 4th in the league, but only 3 points behind 1st and a win would really give us a great chance of retaining the title and another shot at Europe, I would urge you all to try to include the fixture in your upcoming plans.
We also took part in the European Cup late last month in Mersin, Turkey.
It's safe to say that the standard of competition was even higher than that which we experienced last time we took part in 2012, when we finished 6th. 6th was the target again, as we faced the might of the Turkish, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Czech champions, all of whom were virtual national sides. The Turks, in particular, had a tasty line up that saw their athletes win the 100m in 10.18, the 1500m in 3:38 and the 5000m in 13:30. You get the picture.
Virtually everyone n the team performed up to or ahead of expectations and we even saw PBs and best performances for some years from some athletes.
In the end, it came down to the 4x400m, with us needing to finish ahead of the Danish team to avoid relegation. Despite a heroic and dramatic relay, we didn't quite make it over the line and finished an agonising 7th.
There was great spirit showed throughout the weekend and we WILL be back to make up for the disappointment! Full results available via TPOT.
