YDL NORTHERN CHAMPIONS
Sale Harriers U13 & U15 boys and girls are the 2015 Northern Champions of the Young Athletes Premier League. The final match victory at Bebington (Wirral) ensured they retained their Northern title – their 8th in nine years and was their 48th match win out of 54 matches since the league began in 2004.
Our U15 girl sprinters, hurdlers and long-jumpers were amazing winning all ten individual events and both relays. Congratulations to ELLIE JACKSON (3 wins), LAURELLE OBI (3 wins), TESS MC HUGH (3 wins), MIA LOWNDES (2 wins), LIZZIE TWITE (2 wins), RUKA SHONIBARE (2 wins), TIA BLISSETT, MIA GIBBONS and CHARLOTTE MAIRS. Ellie, Tess and Mia Lowndes are also to be congratulated on being selected to compete in the English Schools Combined Events Championships. Multi-eventers are a crucial part of our team as was also demonstrated in the throws with LOIS MC TIFFIN and HANNAH BLOOD scoring well including individual victories. LUCIE WOLFENDEN made an excellent debut to finish 2nd in the pole-vault.
The multi-event theme continued in the U13 girls with PENNY TOWNSEND, winner of four county titles, ( including multi-event) winning the 800m and along with JESS SPILSBURY, LARA CRAWFORD, RUBY BELL and MAISIE WISEMAN dominating the middle-distance events. The sprint relay team of TYLER HILL, ANNA KERSHAW, AYLA HEWITT, and KATE BIRD won by a convincing margin and all the girls scored well in the individual events including two PB’s for Ayla. Others who ran PB’s were ALICE DALE (hurdles) and MAISIE WISEMAN (800m).
The U15 boys were dominant in the sprints and hurdles with individual victories from DANIEL AFOLABI, RHYS PARKER, DYLAN STARKIE, NAHOM SELEMON and DANIELO JARBATH. Danielo then teamed up with ARON TZEGAY, DAPO OLAREWAJU and MICHAEL ODEJIM for a convincing three second victory in the 4 x 300m relay. The most impressive performance of the day was from SHANE CONNELL who jumped a massive PB of 1.84m to win the high jump and to go joint top of the national rankings whilst MICHAEL ODEJIMI jumped 1.75m to win the B event. For the first time this year, we had boys competing in the pole-vault. Well done to SYZMON PLUDOWSKI and ARON TZEGAY (Fill The Gaps – Win The Match !!!).
SAM WORTHINGTON was our star athlete in the U13 boys winning both sprints plus a third place in the long jump and teaming up with NEO IVANOVIC-BROWN, CHARLIE WATSON, and RORY KINRADE to win the sprint relay. BEN KERSH made a great debut for the club with wins in the javelin and 100m plus 3rd place in the shot.
Sale was again dominant in the middle distance races with two victories, three second places and a number of PB’s. Well done to CHARLIE HOBSON, GEORGE SAFRANAUSKAS, JOEL STRINGER, ZENON CAINE and JOHN LEWIS. CHARLIE WATSON (200m) and ZAK STILLER (hurdles) both recorded wins with PB performances whilst SAM WADSWORTH and FINLAY MURPHY were runners up in throwing events.
This year over 200 clubs competed in the YDL and now the top eight will go through to contest the National Final in Birmingham in September. Sale are the only club to have made it to the final every year since the league began in 2004 and as both northern champions and reigning National Champions will face stiff competition from the best teams from all over Great Britain in our bid to retain our National title. Representing the North against the Scottish and Welsh champions will give many of our U13 and U15 athletes their first taste of international competition and I feel sure that Northern pride and the confidence of being reigning national champions will ensure they give a good account of themselves.
This journey to becoming Northern Champions would have been impossible without the background work of the team managers so, once again, primary thanks must go to CARL WORTHINGTON and DAVE MARSH for all their work over the weeks and months of this four match competition. Thanks too to parents for their support and to the field officials who’ve helped win matches by their participation. Thanks also the ERNIE GREENWOOD for his photographs.
