City of Salford 10K 2015
Sunday 6th September saw 23 Sale Harriers take to the streets of Salford for the City of Salford 10K. With over 3700 entrants, this increasingly popular race saw a modified route taking in Salford Quays, Media City and Old Trafford; a rather twisty, winding course in surprisingly warm conditions.
Despite that, a number of Sale Harriers achieved significant PBs and the club triumphed, winning both the ladies' and men's team prizes (Nigel Martin, Gareth Raven and Tim Kennedy for the men and Katie White, Sarah Douglas and Anne Chinoy for the women).
First in and in 4th place was Nigel Martin (32:09) who commented, "decent run, but I don't think the time reflects my current form. I ended up on my own the whole way and needed competition to really push hard. The course was extremely twisty and so my PB at Trafford (31:45) lives to fight another day, despite this being a much stronger run. Hoping for much better at the super quick Leeds Abbey Dash."
Next in, 8th place and 1st Male V40 was Gareth Raven (32:41) followed in 14th place by Tim Kennedy (35:31) who said "I was running it as a hard training run so not 100% all out, so reasonably pleased with 35:31, especially as it's a twisty-turny course with a fair number of mini hills and bridges. Ran with Andy Mooney for much of the first half before pushing on a bit.
First in for the ladies and in an impressive 5th place was Katie White (38:31). Her PB is 36:59 back in 2012.
Then came Alistair Kell (38:57) who said "rather annoyingly I ran exactly the same time as I did for the Trafford 10k earlier this year... 5 seconds off my 5 year old PB. 2nd time I've run it and an enjoyable race if slightly tight at the end". Luke Spilsbury was 70th (39:01) - a debut 10K.
Sarah Douglas (40:23) was our second lady, finishing in 11th place. Her 10k PB of 38:53 was achieved earlier in the year at the Great Manchester run. She was closely followed by 2nd place MV50, Steve Parry in 40:33 (his PB was 39:10 in the 2012 Salford 10K).
Next in and with another significant PB was MV40 Craig Bradbury (40:33). Craig says he was "very pleased with a PB in my first race as a veteran! I took nearly 4 minutes off last years time."
Anne Chinoy (40:47) was 1st FV40, finishing in 13th place with a 92 second PB. She was really pleased with the time and glad to back on form having struggled with injuries in recent months. Only one second behind Anne was Zoe Gmerek (40:48) - 2nd FV40 and in 14th place overall. Another impressive PB following her significant 5K PB at the last Sizzler. Zoe commented "My Salford 10k run was a 40 second PB. My last one was Leeds 2012 before the babies!!"
Pete Shipley (42:23) is currently struggling with injuries. 4th place MV55 John Battersby (44:08) was next, then Matthew Leicester (45:18).
It was another significant PB for MV60 Martin Smedley (45:20) who said he was "really chuffed as its 1.39 faster than my Manchester 10k time in May. So the extra hill training on Monday nights has paid off!"
8th place MV60 Jerry Smith and Crispin Miller both finished with a chip time of 45:45. Jerry commented "Not being race fit I enjoyed a steady run in the sunshine with good crowd support at the start and finish. Great to see lots of fellow Sale Harriers in the race with many celebrating PBs at the end!"
FV40 Wendy Terry (46:42) achieved her race goal and felt it was fair time given her current level of fitness.
Due to injury, Fran Sweeney & Aiden Raftery approached the race as a gentle run (47:26). Fran commented "myself and Aiden are both injured so jogged around 47:26 mins... thought the course was a bit drab to say the least".
FV40 Carla Ousey (49:16) was targeting sub-50 and had a good run which she felt reflected her current levels of training.
