ISLE OF MAN EASTER RUNNING FESTIVAL
With the annual Easter trip to Newlands cancelled a group of Sale Harriers decided to venture over to the Isle of Man for the Easter running festival. Despite late cancellation of the ferry resulting in some last minute flight booking Sale had a complete men's team (Nigel Martin, Dave Marsh, Rob Flannery and Chris Donnelly) and a partial women's team (Helen Armitage, Luisa Candioli and Janneke Van Beijnum). However, due to injuries neither team survived the weekend. Dave Rich and James Walsh were also there but running for their university clubs.
The festival consists of three running events - a 10K, a fell race and a 5K. Due to a combination of the hilly terrain and the strong winds none of these events made for a fast time, though there were still strong fields in each event. After 2 events the women's vet prize was tied and after a determined win over her opponent in the final event Helen Armitage won the overall vet women's prize.
A key part of the weekend is the social activities. These included a 12.5 mile 'running' pubcrawl from Peel to Douglas with stops at pubs and kegs randomly hidden in bushes. Then on Sunday night was the main event of the festival - the prize giving and event 4 of the weekend - the pint downing beer relays. Much training happens for the beer relays over the course of the weekend and Sale entered a team in the competition. We failed to make the quarter finals against seasoned opposition so more practice required for next time! Overall a fantastic weekend.
