YDL (Lower) NORTHERN PREMIER (1)
Sale started their defence of their U13 & U15 Northern League title with a 50 point victory over Preston in their first match at Spinkhill, Sheffield. Our girl’s team were particularly impressive and under the team management of CARL WORTHINGTON, has remained unbeaten at Northern and National level since 2013. We hold the national record for the 4x300m relay and our team of TESS Mc HUGH, LIZZIE TWITE, JESS NELSON, and MIA LOWNDES won by five seconds whilst an equally awesome foursome of LAURELLE OBI, RUKA SHONIBARE, PRAISE OWOEYE and CHLOE NEWBIGGING won the sprint relay by fifteen metres. We again scored maximum points in the pole vault with LUCIE WOLFENDEN and SOPHIE ASHURST (the daughter of Sale Harrier Commonwealth PV Gold medallist, ANDY ASHURST), both vaulting PB’s to win their event.
Our middle distance runners were in fine form with LARA CRAWFORD, ALYSSA DAVY, TIA RAE BARTON and ALICE TONGE all winning their events. Northern champion DEVON WEYMONT was runner up in the long jump whilst ANNA KERSHAW won her hurdles event with a big PB. Cheshire multi event gold medallist LOIS Mc TIFFIN and silver medallists SCARLETT WHITTAKER each competed in three events, setting PB’s and scoring a shed load of points for the club. Our star performers in the U13 girls were RUBY BELL with a big PB in the 800m and RENE GOOSEN with PB’s in both sprints. It was very encouraging to see so many Primary age girls competing for the club and showing so much talent and maturity. Well done to ISABELLE BURKE, TAYLOR EDWARDS, HERMIONE MASON, ELLISE FRYER-FRANCIS, JASMINE RICHARDSON, LIBBY HILL and ERIN DONNELLY. A special mention should go to MELISSA BOOTH who, unable to run at the moment through injury, learnt to throw the javelin and finished in the silver medal position and National Biathlon Champion OLIVIA HERRON who took time out from a swimming gala in Leeds to travel over to Sheffield and win her 800m event.
Our star in the boy’s event was LOUIS APPIAH-KUBI who scored a fine sprint double victory and teamed up with LEWIS HINDLE, SAM EBONINE and ODUOISE THEODORE to win the sprint relay by an incredible 25m. Further sprint success came when ALEX ARMSTRONG-BROWN, SAM HEYWORTH, GEORGE SAFRANAUSKAS and SAM WORTHINGTON teamed up to finish runners up in the 4 x 300m relay. BROGAN RUDMAN finished 2nd in the hurdles with a new PB whilst BROOK WYATT was runner up in the pole vault. Once more we gained maximum points in the high jump with SAM EBONINE and JED BAILEY whilst BEN KIRSH, SAM WADSWORTH and VEER BATRA scored well in the throws. SAM WORTHINGTON and ALEX ARMSTRONG-BROWN competed with great success in four events each and contributed a massive points total to the score. – truly men of Sheffield steel!!!! ALEX JAMES was our star in the U13 boys winning the 1500m in a new PB. The rest of the team showed great spirit and commitment to the club but as most are still at Primary school we can expect better performances as they gain experience.. Well done to KANE SAVILLE, RYAN NEWBIGGING, DAVID AITKEN, TOM BOYD, WILL PARKER, ARCHIE Mc CARRON and MACKENA BRADSHAW.
A special commendation must go to DAVE MARSH, the boy’s team manager, who had a particularly difficult job to turn out a good boy’s team. The girl’s have many more talented athletes and competition for team places is fierce. Those disappointed in not being selected should keep competing (in a ranger of events) in championships and open meetings. We must also send out a big thank you to the club officials – some of whom were parents, who were awarded the maximum 55 points for the club.
