NORTHERN YDL (Lower) CHAMPIONS
Sale Harriers U13 and U15 boys and girls are the 2016 Northern YDL champions after the final match at Liverpool in which they scored 617 points which is the highest ever points total in a Northern Premier match, to win by over 100 points and win their ninth Northern title in ten years. In the process, they set three National YDL records and three club records.
Our star athlete was the fantastic ABRAHAM FOBIL who won three events in the U13 boy’s age-group, setting league records in the 100m and 200m and club records in the javelin and 100m (equal with JONA EFOLOKU). Trained within the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation, his performances rank him first in the UK over 200m, second over 100m and third in the javelin. Other top three finishers in this age-group were JOE HERBERT, KANE SAVILLE, TOM BOYD, DOMINIC REID, MACKENA BRADSHAW and RYAN NEWBIGGING.
Our star team was the U15 girls 4 x 300m relay team of MIA LOWNDES, PENNY TOWNSEND, LIZZY TWITE and TESS Mc HUGH who broke their own club and national league record. Our most successful female athlete was DEVON WEYMONT who won high jump and long jump by big margins. Our girl sprinters were again in dominant form with eight individual sprint victories and winning the sprint relay by over two seconds. Well done to MIA LOWNDES, CHLOE NEWBIGGING, LAURELLE OBI, RUKA SHONIBARE, TESS Mc HUGH, JESS NELSON, PRAISE OWOEYE and LIZZY TWITE. Our middle distance girls were also outstanding with MIA GIBBONS, BETH THORNTON, LARA CRAWFORD and JESS SPILBSURY all recording PB’s whilst ALICE TONGE won her 800 race by seven seconds. We remain unbeaten in the pole vault and this time it was AMY HASLAM and LUCIE WOLFENDEN who vaulted PB’s to gain maximum points for the club yet again. Multi-eventers are like gold-dust and SCARLETT WHITTAKER again hurdles, jumped and threw to add to our massive points total.
Our most successful event in the U15 boys was the high-jump with victories from SAM EBONINE and JED BAILEY. We were almost as successful in the pole vault with BROOK WYATT and BEN KERSH who were just short of gaining maximum points for the team. Congratulations to LOUIS APPIAH-KUBI who remains unbeaten over 100m and CALEB ADENUGA who again won the long jump. Other top three finishers in this age-group were NEO IVANOVIC-BROWN, SAM WADSWORTH, SAM WORTHINGTON, LEWIS HINDLE, BROGAN RUDMAN and EWAN HOLT
RUBY BELL was the star in the U13 girls event improving her PB in the 1200m by six seconds. Our other middle distance girls were in dominant form with wins from ISABELLE BURKE, OLIVIA HERON, TAYLOR-EDWARDS and HERMIONE MASON. MELISSA BOOTH recorded a PB to win the long jump by a comfortable margin. FANNY OSARUMEN ODEMWENGIE ran impressive times to win her two sprint events whilst RENI GOOSEN contributed to our massive points total by taking part in four events winni8ng two of them. Well done to SOFIJA DRAGISIC-WOOD who won her hurdles event in a new PB and a special mention to primary age JASMINE RICHARDSON who competed with distinction in four events – a name for the future and a credit to her coaches.
A final mention goes to primary age athletes HARRY EDMUNDSON, LIBBY HILL and GRACE TONGE who all recorded PB’s over 800m
CARL WORTHINGTON and DAVID MARSH, as the team managers, are key to the success of this YDL team again this year. The club, as indeed all the athletes, parents, officials and parents, thanks them. Thanks to everyone who contributed to a superb nine Northern titles in ten years, of course, giving a special mention also to the all important club officials who won the club maximum points in every match.
