England Athletics Challenge Match
A team of the clubs 12-13 year olds took on seven other teams to win a challenge match featuring relays and highland games field events held within the Manchester International at Sport City recently.
Our girls’ team, managed by Anita Richardson was dominant. Well done to Dids Parish, Taylor Edwards, Libby Hill, Jasmin Richardson, Osa Odemwengie, Kia Clarkson, Success Eduan, Charlotte Wilkinson, Olivia Brown, Ella Gillespie, Melissa Booth and Elise Fryer-Francis. The girls won the sprint relay and long jump team event, they finished second in the distance relay and third in both the medley relay and continuous relay. In the Highland Games field events Charlotte won the weight for distance event, Melissa the long jump, Ella the bull nosed javelin and Osa was runner up in the weight for height. In all the girls were awarded 11 AAA's engraved silver salvers and 15 engraved AAA's medals for their efforts.
Our boys team managed by Dave Marsh were also in tremendous form. Well done to Dom Reid, Joe Herbert, Evan Savage, Elliot Savage, Emmanuel Johnson, Scott Woods, Torin Lindsey, Basil Zola, Kane Saville, Leonardo Scott, Baye Mbengue and Mohammed Cole. The boys won the continuous relay, distance relay and long jump team event and finished third in the medley relay. Basil Zola was our most successful athlete winning both the vertical jump and long jump. In all the boys won 7 engraved AAA's silver salvers and 10 AAA's engraved medals.
Our winning girl’s 4x100m relay team were invited to take part in the main event of the evening International match - 'The Golden Relay'. This was a unique spectacle as it was the first and maybe the last time that Darren Campbell raced on the same team as the winning quartet from the Athens Olympic Games. Needless to say Daren's team won whilst our girls still impressed by finishing in front of the winning boys team from the afternoons challenge match.
