Northern XC Champs
The Northern Cross Country Championships at Harewood House, near Leeds produced the club’s best overall team performance since the Millennium when we won four team championships. This year we won three team races, one runner up slot, one 3rd place plus a 4th and 6th team placing. These results made us the most successful team in the North. Our individual medal tally of one gold, two silvers and two bronze was incredible.
Pride of place goes to FRANCESCA BRINT who ran the race of her life to win the U20 race by a clear margin. JULIET DOWNS had a fantastic run to finish runner-up whilst CLAUDIA COWAN was just behind with an outstanding 3rd place. With three to count, we won the championship with the lowest possible team score. OLIVIA GREEN ran well to finish 16th.
Our senior men retained the senior title they won last year with a 26 point victory over Leeds City. Congratulations to JAMIE RODEN, NIGEL MARTIN, LUKE BETTS, MATT BARNES, PHIL ROBERTSON and CALLUM ROWLINSON.
Our senior women finished runners up, just two points behind Leeds City. GEORGIA TAYLOR-BROWN maintained her great record in these Championships to finish in bronze medal position and teamed up with KATIE HEWISON, DANIELLE FEGAN and HANNAH BROWN to win the silver medals.
Our U13 boys improved from 7th team place last year to win the Championship by a large margin. Congratulations to JACK SPARK, JAMES KELLY, ARCHIE McCARRON and CHARLIE TITTENSOR.
The U13 girls were the reigning champions but on this occasion had to settle for 3rd team placing and bronze medals. LARA CRAWFORD led the field until the closing stages until she was overtaken by English Schools Champion and fellow Fallibrome High School pupil SIAN HISLOP, to win the silver medal. JESS SPILSBURY, MAISIE WISEMAN and EMILY -KATE HALL were our other medallists.
Our U17 women’s team were the reigning Northern Champions but, as all last year’s team have moved up to the U20 age-group, it’s not surprising they were unable to retain the title. Our team of STEFFI MOSS, HOLLY JACKSON, BETH THORNTON and HANNAH WITCHELLS, ran well to finish 4th team and will be aiming to regain the team title next year.
Our U13 girls were runners up last year. On this occasion, NIAMH BOYD, OLIVIA NOLAN, OLIVIA BROWN and AKIRA EDGSON ran well to finish 6th team. With illness depriving us of a number of crucial runners we will hope to medal again next year when the girls move up to the next age group.
Next year we will be fielding a new U13 girl’s team that already shown great potential. This opens up the prospect next year of Sale teams medalling in all five female age-group Northern Championships.
