Sale Harriers is deeply saddened to learn of the death of two-time Olympian Philippa Roles this past weekend.
The 39-year-old discus thrower from Neath, Wales, with links to Sale Harriers, represented Great Britain at the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Roles also competed for the Swansea athletics club, her personal best throw of 62.89 metres, achieved in June 2003, has her placed fourth in the British all-time rankings.
As a junior, Roles finished third at the 1997 European Junior Championships and fourth at the 1999 European U23 Championships.
The Wales’ 2008 discus Champion also placed fourth at two Commonwealth Games, in Manchester and Delhi, and sixth in Kuala Lumpur and Melbourne.
“We send our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Philippa at this sad time.”

The club are a step closer to retaining their Northern Premier title after a 120 point victory over Preston with home club Leeds in 3rd place. The quality of performance was tremendous, especially as most of the match was held in pouring rain (see photos). The highlight was SAM WORTHINGTON who ran a Grade 1 performance of 37.10 seconds to win the 300m and equal the club U15 record held by JONA EFOLOKO.
SUCCESS EDUAN won both the U13 girl sprints with Grade 1 performances and is to be congratulated on setting club records for both the U13 girl’s 75m and 150m at a recent Trafford medal meeting. SOPHIE ASHURST was incredible in the U15 pole vault. Competing in the worst weather conditions, she spent much of the competition under an umbrella keeping herself and her pole dry and still vaulted a Grade 1 performances of 3.22m. The wind was gusting so strongly she might have gone even higher using the umbrella rather than the pole – Mary Poppins style!
Other highlights were other Grade 1 winning performances from HERMIONE MASON, ABRAHAM FOBIL, POPPY GLASBY-SEDDON, BRANDON MORGAN and TAYLOR EDWARDS. In all we had 45 individual victories and 3 wins in relay events. The middle distance squad had their best match result for some time with victories from JAMES KELLY, JACK SPARK, TAYLOR EDWARDS, HARRY EDMUNDSON, LARA CRAWFORD, JESS SPILSBURY and MAISIE WISEMAN. A special mention to AIDAN LYNCH and AKIRA EDGSON who improved their PB’s by large margins.
Sale sprinters were again dominant with victories from SUCCESS, SAM, BRANDON, ABRAHAM, HERMIONE, CHARLOTTE WILKINSON, PRAISE OWOEYE, LUI DEMATOS, JASMINE RICHARDSON, HOLLY MURRAY, OSA ODEMWENGIE, LIBBY WARREN, CLARA EDLER and AYLA HEWITT. MACKENA BRADSHAW was our most successful athlete in the throws with two victories. Other wins in the throws came from ABRAHAM FOBIL, MIA WALKER, TORRIN LINDSEY, SAM BROWN and PRAISE OWOEYE. In the jumps, BROOK WHYATT, JED BAILEY, SAM WORTHINGTON, ELLISE FRYER-FRANCIS and HOLLY MURRAY all finished in the first two of their events.
The 3rd of four matches is at home at Sportcity on Sunday 18th June and we would welcome your support.
A special thanks to MICK MITCHELL who has provided several photographs from the match. Mick is not a Sale Harrier but generously has provided many photographs over the years from matches he attends.

It was great news for Jessica Taylor-Jemmett and Grace Bower that they were both recently picked to represent GB in The Indoor Combined Events International in Prague.
Jess came third in the seniors and this was Graces first time competing for GB as a first year U20, and she came a respectable 10th improving her points score by 161points and gaining 4 PB's.
Well done both girls.

The final Gtr. Manchester Sportshall League match at Sportscity saw the culmination of our best ever season in the league. Our U11 boy’s team retained their league title, whilst the U11, U13 and U15 girl’s teams all became league champions.
The U11 boy’s team of LEONARDO SCOTT, TORRIN LINDSEY, OLIVER PERRIN, MATTHEW YOUNG, TOM HOBSON, ERIC HEYWORTH and DANIEL HARRISON won the sprint relay and were runners up in the obstacle relay, whilst Leonardo won both sprint relays and Torrin was 3rd in the javelin. HARRY EDMUNDSON was an impressive winner of the boy’s U13 six lap event.
The U11 girl’s team of THEA BROWN, OLIVIA BUCHAN, CAITLIN Mc MANUS, ISABELLE BEAUMONT, GRACE EDMUNDSON and GRACE BOOTH were in great form in the sprint and relay obstacle events, whilst Olivia won the speed bounce and Thea placed 3rd in both sprint events.
The U13 girl’s team of MELISSA BOOTH, SOFIJA DRAGISIC-WOOD, HERMIONE MASON, KIA CLARKSON, ELLIE COLQUHOUN-LYNN and LIBBY HILL were all in fantastic form with Melissa, Sofija, Hermione, Kia and Ellie all winning individual events, whilst the relay team finished 2nd. A big thank you to Kia and Libby who turned out at very short notice to ensure that we completed a team and won the league. Libby had already completed a hard training session at Crossford before her phone rang asking her to make up the team.
The U15 girl’s team of POPPY GLASBY-SEDDON, SCARLETT WHITTAKER, SOPHIE TILLEY, ELLA MARSHALL, LAURA CREAMER, TIGGY FALLOON and EILEEN BOYUNGA gets better with each match. Scarlett and Sophie both won their shot-putt events with PB’s whilst Poppy performed well in the sprint events. Laura finished 3rd in the 6-lap event in her league debut and is another club member who turned out at short notice to ensure team success.
A big thanks to team managers, coaches, officials, parents and athletes making this our most successful Gtr. Manchester Sportshall League season.

Diane Royle (nee Williams) has sadly passed away aged just 56. She was a member of the club in the 1970's and 1980's, her main event was the javelin. Diane went on to throw the javelin for Scotland and competed in the commonwealth games. Diane still holds the club record for the javelin. Her record of 62.22m was achieved at Stretford stadium in 1985 and has stood for nearly 32 years.
Our thoughts go out to her family and friends at this sad time.
