Coaches, marshals, officials, administrators and other helpers.
Volunteer Roles
Sale Harriers Manchester is run entirely by volunteers. We are always looking for help from anyone who feels that they may want to get involved and contribute towards any aspect of running the club. From administration work, fundraising, organising events, coaching, officiating, managing teams, volunteers will always be made very welcome. It can be on a regular or an ad hoc basis.
Coaches
Our coaches are volunteers. Many are former athletes, including elite internationals. Some are parents of children who are members of the Club. Others are still active athletes.
We have many opportunities to get involved, either as lead coaches or assistants, for adults and children alike. Whether you have previously been a coach or would like to be part of the coaching team for the first time, we can help you to progress on the coaching journey, and to gain qualifications along the way.
Officials
Throughout the track season we run a number of events and compete in several league competitions. For these to run, we rely on officials to volunteer their time.
For each of the league matches (Northern T&F, NAL, UKYDL) the Club scores points for providing officials. By attending a handful of meetings over the course of the year, you really can contribute to the team score. It is also a great way to meet like-minded people from all walks of life and to make friends and socialise.
No prior experience is needed; and the club would be happy to pay for you to attend an officiating course.

Sale Harriers Manchester has the honour of hosting several cross country matches in the winter. Manchester Area League, Over the Bales, Schools Leagues and some Championship Events too. To ensure the success of these fixtures we require marshals. No former experience is needed, just plenty of enthusiasm to direct and cheer on all the runners. We also promote many road races such as The Sale Sizzlers 5k Race Series and periodically, Road Relays. We also have our own Winter Indoor Athletics Series, where there is a great demand for volunteers.
Remember all the times you’ve run a race and appreciated the direction from the marshals – now it’s your chance to replenish your running karma and return the favour! If you can be there for just one of the day’s races or all of them, it will be a great help. It is even possible to marshal before/after your own event on race day.
Other volunteers
We are always on the look out for Team Managers, Captains and Assistants for all age groups and disciplines; Track & Field, Road & off-road races and Cross Country.
Other simple ways to get involved include joining a team to make rolls and sandwiches for the officials at our indoor meetings or other events. Or transporting and setting up club tents/flags and offering a lift to athletes without transport etc.
You may want to assist at our club sessions on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings e.g. taking training fees, helping in the tuck shop or kit shop.
If you can use your skills to support and develop the Club, you will find that your contribution is much appreciated. Please use the contact form below to get involved.
