Sale Harriers had two incredible World Masters Champions at the World Masters Games in Daegu, South Korea in August.
Davey Proctor is a second-claim Sale Harrier, coached by Norman Poole at Wythenshawe Park. He became double World M40 champion over 800m and 1500m, and is now World M40 champion over three distances, having become World Masters 3000m champion last year. This was also his second 1500m world title. Last year the incredibly talented Davey also broke the British M40 mile record and anchored an M35 team to a new European and World 4x800m record (all recorded in the Harrier magazine). In July he was honoured – not for the first time – to compete at the Monaco Diamond League in that iconic stadium, where he broke the British V40 1000m record. That was “a dream come true”, he said.
Andy Ashurst, the 1986 Commonwealth Games pole vault champion and 2025 World Masters M60 silver medallist, went one better to become World Masters M60 Pole Vault Champion – and he really did have a story to tell. Super-fit Andy had earlier competed in his first ever decathlon (amazing!) and finished 5th in the world. He won pole vault gold even though his body was in ‘bits’ from the tough decathlon competition, becoming World M60 champion with his opening height of 3.70m. Andy is the current M60 British pole vault record holder, and in April at Long Beach, California he improved his record further to a new height of 4.05m.
