Kadeena Cox, Sale Harriers’ famous para-athlete and four-time Paralympics GB cycling champion, made her Team England debut at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, having missed out on the previous two Commonwealth Games due to injury. She won her first ever Commonwealth Games medal – silver in the C4-C5 1000m time trial.
This was a tremendous result for her because, competing earlier in her signature event – the C4-C5 4000m individual pursuit, in which she won gold at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 – she underperformed because, in her words, “my Multiple Sclerosis was becoming harder to manage”.
Kadeena first joined Sale Harriers in 2013 as a talented U23 able-bodied sprinter. In 2014 Fechin McCormick, deputising for legendary UKWAL team manager Eric Hughes, who had died a few weeks earlier, returned her safely to Sportcity following the match near London. The following day he received the news that Kadeena had suffered a debilitating stroke. She was later diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
