British Masters 5K National Championships
Sale Harriers were represented by six club members in the annual BMAF National 5k Champs held at Horwich at the weekend. The scorching temperatures of the previous year were not a concern although a slight blustery head wind in the early part of the race made it a problem. Thankfully, the wind did seem to ease off.
Frank Cordingley was first to finish (18:34). He dealt with the wind by "tucking" in behind a group on the first lap to cruise along in their slipstream. James Lambe, the next to finish (20:39), got a bit carried away at the start as usual and decided to "tuck in" behind Frank. His decision to take advantage of Frank's slipstream quickly diminished as Frank powered out of view. James was nevertheless pleased with his effort especially that the opposition around him were of high standard.
Jackie Cordingley was next to finish with another consistent and solid performance (21:32). She was pleased with her effort. Tim Rainey was next (21:44)! He'd done a fell race the day before and had come down to the foothills of Horwich to sharpen up on the flattish course (apart from the long climb that is). Geoff Beattie, a last minute entry, was not far behind Tim (22:01). Geoff was suffering from the "shakes", as was James Lambe, though for different reasons. James' was genuine nervousness (after all this was a national Championship!) but Geoff's was more related to a late Saturday night - enough said! He produced a very respectable time in the circumstances and doubtless will be back next year now he's got a "taste" of racing at National Level.
Brian Bradshaw was just over a minute behind Geoff in a very respectable 23:40. Brian is getting stronger and doing this race will stand him in good stead for the future.
Big congratulations to Frank, James and Tim who won the Men's 45 - 54 age group team prize. Yes! they're gold medal winners at a National Championship and they've the medals to prove it. They've also won a place in the club's annual Roll of Honour?
