Magnificent Launch In Northern League
The combined senior men and women's team, competing as City of Manchester, had a very successful start to the season in First Division of the North of England Track and Field League. The first match of the season took place at Blackburn, who have been our main rivals over the past few seasons. The team recorded an excellent first place victory by over 30 points from Preston in second. This was a great result as the team aims to retain the title they won last year for the first time since the men and women's teams combined. The team was a mix of experienced athletes, some taking the opportunity to open their season ahead of the National league starting at the end of the month, and also athletes who were new to the team, some still juniors who acquitted themselves well against the senior opposition.
The women's team lacked in numbers but those that competed gave their all and ensured they scored highly for the team. Brogan Crowley, Jasmine Burke and newcomer to the club and track running Sarah Harris were all rewarded with PB's, while Emily Beedham, Alison Pye and Laure Douglas were all pleased with how they opened the season. Nicola Cahill, Connie Briggs, Lauren Bowen and Charlotte Dickinson must all be congratulated on the points they scored across the events in which they competed.
The men were hardly ever outside the top 2 positions across the afternoon, with excellent performances too many to mention individually. The men dominated the competition across the majority of the events, achieving high standards and the whole team must be congratulated for the excellent start to the season which can only bode well for what's to come this year. Matt Cullen's 4m 70cm clearance in the pole vault stands out as a top performer, along with Darren Hammond's 2m 00cm high Jump, plus a plethora of fine spinters who dominated the proceedings up to 400m, whilst Jack Andrew, Joe Lancaster, John Nicholls and Segii Sareyev were majestic in the throws.
Thanks must also be given to the officials who endured the ever changing weather conditions and ensured we gained a full complement of points towards our total score. Full results for all events are available of the North of England website. The second match of the season takes place in Hull on the 26th May, where we aim to maintain our first place in the league standings. (Presented by team manager Alison Pye.
