The Sale 5K Sizzlers (1)
The first of the 2012 Sale Sizzler 5k series took place in
Wythenshawe Park on Thursday evening and was the traditional big
success. Over 400 runners of all abilities took part on an evening
that threatened rain but turned out to be perfect conditions. This
major club promotion that race director Fechin Mc Cormick launched
after the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games has the duel objective
of providing athletic excellence and encouraging community health
and fitness as well as raising much needed funds for the club
coffers. . Both objectives were admirably achieved.
Matt Barnes of Altrincham & District Athletics Club was the
first male to cross the finish line in an impressive 15.1 minutes.
The first female home was Sale Harrier, Louise Whittaker in a swift
17 .15 minutes. The first of over fifty Sale Harriers was Gareth
Raven in second place (15.04), just 24 hours after 2nd place in the
Offerton 10k. The final runner crossed the line in just over
forty-five minutes. Every finisher received a goody bag. Prizes
were presented by Ronhill's Marketing Director, Graham Richards and
Commonwealth Games 800m champion, Diane Modahl. This year's series
is also aiming to raise money for the Diane Modahl Sports
Foundation, which aims to bring high quality coaching opportunities
to young people, particularly those living in disadvantaged
The main sponsors this year are Ronhill, the long-established
internationally recognised brand leader in running sportswear.
Adactus Housing Association and Yours Housing Group, two leading
social housing providers in the region, contributed towards costs;
Kellogs for their health bars; the Sweatshop for the plastic bags;
Shotz Energy gels who provided hydration advice and Mornflakes Oats
who also promoted healthy lifestyles with their breakfast oats
sachets in every goody bag. MLH Physiotherapy based in Sale
Leisure Centre provided specialist advice on energy prevention and
injury rehabilitator specialist Anatomy Manchester offered free

Note that several inaccurate results are awaiting amendments.
The final race of the series on August 16th will incorporate the
Northern 5k Road championships. Just a few days after the Olympics
end, it will also be a very special event. Re-named 'Run with
Olympians 5k', already no less than eight ex-Olympians will be
taking part possibly making it the largest gathering of Olympians
outside the Olympic Games.
