Northern Road Relays 2012
The sun shone gloriously this weekend, as did our Sale runners at the Northern Road Relay Championships in Leigh Sports Village.
Sale started this first meet of the winter season on a high note with the U13 girls winning the Northern Road Relay title. Aine Cunningham ran a superb first leg, which was also the fastest 3k in this hotly contested category. This gave the team of three a clear lead over the competition, further extended by Olivia Green and Ellie Twite on 2nd and 3rd legs, to beat the competition by a clear margin.
The U15 boys should be commended for finishing 2 teams in their race in 15th and 24th place.
In the U17 women's relay Megan Davies had a great run on the first leg coming in second place with the third fastest time of the day. Chloe Yates and Hannah Christy ran well to bring the team home in 5th place.
The senior ladies finished 3 full teams with strong performances from Lucy O'Gorman and Jan Nicholls. The A team would have finished well inside the top 20 had a marshall not sent one of our runners the wrong way.
There was plenty of hustle and bustle at the start of the mens race with close to 100 teams toeing the line and of those 5 were members of Sale Harriers. Team spirit was high and there was plenty of chatter at the team meeting point close to the start finish line, with a great scope of age groups from under 20's to over 50's. Of the teams that had been put together it was hopeful that the A team may medal, the B team qualify for the Nationals (if and where they go ahead following the e-coli outbreak in Sutton Park), with the C team aiming to place as high as possible and the D and E teams were set to battle each other.
The A team finished an agonising 4th behind eventual winners Altrincham, who were able to put out their best 6 runners including a London Olympic marathon runner, 2nd placed Liverpool and then Salford. The B team did extremely well in finishing inside the top 10, their 10th place finish was not only the first B team but also put them ahead of the majority of A teams and a further 4 places ahead of Leeds B team.
The C team had again had a very good result in finishing 37th, again beating many other A teams and being first C team a full 9 places and 2 minutes 30 seconds ahead of Liverpool C team. The D team were close on the heels of the C team in 48th a full 17 places ahead of the next D team. Finally the E team finished 73rd out of the 86 finishing teams, only 2 clubs finished this many teams and Sale can proudly say we were first counters in the B through to E teams.
The senior mens team cosisted of Niall Brooks, Anthony Ford, Simon Horsfield, Gareth Raven, James Bailey and Charles Hulson finishing in 4th place. The men finished 5 full teams in this year's event with no incomplete teams. Well done to all those who made the effort.
