Training Weekend In The Dales
Sale Harriers Training Weekend in Ingleton, Yorkshire 5th to 7th October 2012.
This year it was agreed that we would try a new location, in Yorkshire, rather than The Lake District or Wales. This turned out to be a good choice although this success was achieved to some extent by the fine weather experienced over the weekend.
Nearly 60 people travelled up on the Friday for a weekend of running, cycling, ample food, good company and alcohol. The accomodation was The YHA hostel in the centre of Ingleton close to the 3 peaks of Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen y ghent, in the Yorkshire Dales.
The first run of the weekend for most people was before breakfast around Ingleton, where we saw a gentle mist rolling down the valley and had to negotiate stepping stones over a swollen River Doe. This was an easy run of about 3 miles but with a steady climb out of the village to begin.
After a hearty full English breakfast, a good shower and relax, we headed out for some high quality reps around an old quarry. We were split into 3 groups where we all had people to run with of similar ability. Each rep climbed over 50m in elevation meaning that we climbed over 360m in total. A light hearted relay finished the session with some great blood-pumping efforts and swift batten changing.
The afternoon was free to spend as you pleased with some people going for a walk to visit some caves and others visiting the famous waterfalls. Some even went for another run before tea. The evening meal was followed for most people by a few pints in the local hostelry and some stimulating conversation, before retiring to our bunk beds.
Sunday dawned with more blue skies and no wind, and the choice of runs was between accending Inglebrorough, rising to a height of 723m, or an easier 10mile run along the fells above the village climbing to over 400m.
The drive home commenced after lunch with the guests taking with them some great memories, new friendships and rather tired legs. Next year's event is planned for the Easter weekend and will be back in Newlands in The Lakes.
Thanks to the staff at The Youth Hostel who fed us well and made us feel very welcome, to Bill Fox and Jan Nichols etc for recceing the runs and to Paul Barrett for organising the weekend.
