County Cross-Country Championships
The county cross-country championships were this weekend and we had representatives in three counties - Gtr. Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire. In an incredibly muddy Woodbank Park for the Gtr. Manchester Championships, the club's younger sections excelled winning eight team medals, one individual gold, one silver and two bronze medals. With the senior men also winning a team and individual bronze medal, it was the club best performance in these championships for a decade.
Congratulations to the consistently successful U13 girls who made history in winning both the team gold and bronze medals. They also had the individual winner in Olivia Green who convincingly won her first county title by thirty seconds. The talented squad of Olivia, Claudia Cowan (who just missed the bronze medal in her best run of the winter) and Niamh Nugent (5th) brought home the gold and the trio of Frankie Hacker-Davis (6th), Mairead Power (9th) and Tia Blisset (13th) secured the bronze medals. The U13 boys, reigning champions for the past two years, unfortunately did not manage a team this year.
They may have lost the girls title to Stockport AC, but our U15 girls also made history by winning the silver and bronze team medals; finishing three teams and having the Gtr. Manchester silver medallist in Aimee Pratt. Aimee had an incredible run, far improved from her Manchester cross-country matches this winter. Congratulations to her silver medal teammates Amber Towns (6th) and Catherine Podmore (7th) and to the bronze trio 'B' team of Ciara Lydon (8th), Flora Whyte (9th) and Alice Bruce (12th). Congratulations also to Zara Thompson, who's topped her fine winter's racing by winning the U15 medal in the Cheshire Championships. The strength in depth of this section is well characterised in the sixth place of trio Frankie Reid, Hannah Simeen and Charlie Reid. Our U15 boys also had a successful Championship. They finished Champions, the section's first Gtr. Manchester title since 2006. First home was Euan Gilchrist (6th); it was great to have Christy O'Brien (7th) back in the fold and Dillon Burchill was the third counter. The 'B' team were the Spilbury twins (Adam & Jake) and Adam Kinghorn. Congratulations to a promising group of lads. Across the border in Derbyshire, we also had Adam Roden place a magnificent 3rd for the U15 bronze medal.
Our U17 girls and boys also both won team and individual medals. The U17 girls were the silver medallists and produced their best result for almost a decade. They also had the bronze medallist in Megan Davies who can add this to her gold from last year. Irmani Modahl, in 4th place, probably had the best run of her career with Rachel Hibbert (10th) the all important third counter. The lad's bronze medal was also a fine result, thanks to the trio of Matt Metcalfe, Khalid Absiyeh and Matt Beacock.
Our U20 lads are admirably flexing their muscles consistently over the country in a way the club's not experienced for awhile. They won the team title with last year's U17 Gtr Manchester champion and Northern champion Ryan Moore taking the U20 silver medal. Congratulations to Ryan selected to make his England debut in Antrim next weekend. Matt Holmes (10th) and Alex Bradford (11th) made up the winning trio. Across the border in Lancashire Luke Betts also put in a great performance for the individual U20 bronze medal.
Salford AC dominated the senior men's race but not to the extent of last year. Sale retained last year's bronze medals with Gaz Raven adding the bronze medal to his previous gold and silver. Ryan Worland (14th), Rob Flannery (16th) and Peter Crawford (21st) were the medalling quartet. The 'B' quartet finished an excellent 5th thanks to Chris Donnelly (22nd), Dave Marsh (28th), Oliver Gaillemin (35th) and Dan Whittaker (52nd). In the Derbyshire Championships Jamie Roden placed 5th in his first race for eighteen months. Unfortunately, the senior women did not complete a team but Hayley Cavill (10th) and Helen Armitage (14th) both had a good run.
