Blue skies and sunshine made for favourable conditions at the Paula Radcliffe Stadium for the highly popular and widely acclaimed annual Loughborough International at the weekend that's often the launch pad for the outdoor T & F season. It's traditionally a high quality match between Loughborough students past and present, GB U20's England, Scotland, Wales and British Students. Sale Harriers had several noteworthy elements:-
Pole vaulters Andy Sutcliffe and Katie Byres; hammer thrower Mike Floyd and sprinter Kelly Massey were all selected to represent England. Congratulations to them for achieving their latest accolade that's a tribute to their immense talent.
The club had 26 participants across the range of T & F disciplines. In the track event 12 of our 14 athletes achieved tremendous season's best performances. They were Andy Robertson (100m), Roy Ejiakekwu (100m),Umar Hameed (100m), Rebekah Wilson (100m), Kadeena Cox (100m), Ryan Oswald (100m), Lucy Evans (200m), Kelly Massey (400m & 4 x 100 relay)), Nick Samuels (1500m), Danielle Rooney (100m hurdles), Chris Wakefield (400m hurdles), Darren Lewis (400m hurdles) and Abigayle Fitzpatrick (400m hurdles). In the field events, well done also for their SB's to Laura Douglas (Hammer), Alex Smith (Hammer and Rosie Semenytsh (Javelin).
It was an especially good day for Roy Ejiakekwu. Not only was his 100m of 10.60 a PB but he also achieved the qualifying time for the European Junior Championships in Italy. He also had a great leg in the 4 x 100m relay taking the team home in 2nd place.
Abi Fitzpatrick's time in the 400m hurdles was her quickest ever time on English soil. Her next stops are the Bedford International Games and then onto Geneva.
In the men's 200m, Andy Robertson running as a guest, clocked the fastest time of the day, running a huge personal best of 20.76. Earlier, he'd also won his 100m race in 10.39 into a headwind. Congratulations also to Andy who won his first senior GB vest at the Penn Relays in America just a few weeks earlier. He anchored the men's 4 x 100m relay team to 4th place behind USA 1 & 2 and the Jamaican team.
