RIBBLE VALLEY 10K
The post-Christmas Ribble Valley 10k, now dating back thirty years, is always a big ‘un’ and this year was no exception again incorporating the Northern Athletics 10k Championships. The competition at the sharp end was once more awesome with five breaking the magical 30 minutes and 20 going under the very impressive 31 minutes. Liverpool’s Jonny Mellor (29.12) came within 2 seconds of his own course record but wait till you read who’s the first woman!
The club had 5 make their way to Clitheroe. First home was Jaimie Roden making his debut 10k with a fantastic time of 31.25. Could he be now serving notice on his coach and zippy father whose PB in the annals of time was 29.02! Talented U20 Luke Betts, also coached by Paul Roden, improved his best by over a minute to send him right up the rankings among the country’s top juniors with a new PB of 31.40. Great as those performances are, the day’s talking point was, yet again our world class junior triathlete Georgia Taylor-Brown hot on the heels of winning her GB team gold medal at the recent European XC Championships. Making her 10k debut though still just 20 years of age – and remember this girl runs/trains only a few times a week because of all her other triathlon training, she whipped the opposition to finish in 33.39 and immediately be placed 7th fastest on the UK all time rankings topped by Zola Budd. Indeed, it’s reckoned her performance could be the 3rd or 4th fastest ever run by an U20. Kevin Foster was the club’s fifth member and he just missed out on his best for the year with a time of 38:14.
