YDL (Lower) 2 PRESTON
National champions Sale Harriers took a big step towards their eighth Northern title by winning their second round match of their Premier league. This is their 46th match win out of 51 matches since the league began in 2004. The quality of athletes taking part was tremendous featuring as it did many newly crowned county champions from Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire, Merseyside and Gtr. Manchester. For four hours the match was very close between Sale and home team Preston but Sale have the best six-team relay squad in the country and with some relay magic secured the match victory with five of our teams running season’s best performances.
Our star performer was TESS MC HUGH who set a new club record of 41.3 seconds in winning the U15 girl’s 300m which ranks her 3rd in the country. Another club record was set in this age-group with LAURELLE OBI, CHLOE NEWBIGGING, RUKA SHONIBARE and ELLIE JACKSON running 50.2 seconds in the sprint relay. A team of MIA GIBBONS, BETH THORNTON, LIZZY TWITE and TESS MC HUGH won the 4 x 300m relay by three seconds. LAURELLE OBI scored a spectacular sprint double with further individual victories from CHLOE NEWBIGGING, RUKA SHONIBARE, NIAMH NUGENT, ELLIE JACKSON, DEVON WEYMONT, LIZZIE TWITE, VICTORIA BARLOW and MATILDA WATERS.
PENNY TOWNSEND followed up her three county gold medals with victory in the U13 girl’s 800m and 2nd place in the long jump. LARA CRAWFORD and MAISIE WISEMAN finished 1st and 2nd in the 1200m whilst the relay team of TYLER HILL, ANNA KERSHAW, AYLA HEWITT and KATE BIRD finished 2nd to an impressive Liverpool squad. AYLA HEWITT also had two individual victories whilst Tyler also won her sprint race.
Sale won the U13 boy’s relay by over two seconds with a team of ADAM BAGUMA, SAM WORTHINGTON, CHARLIE WATSON and RORY KINRADE. Adam also won the 100m and long jump. Sam, Charlie, Rory and Jed Bailey all scored individual victories whilst country cross-country champion CHARLIE HOBSON finished runner up in the 800m with a new PB whilst GEORGE SAFRANAUSKAS and ALEX JAMES made impressive debuts running PB’s in the 1500m
DANIEL AFOLABI, DILON STARKEY and FINN Mc EWAN-PATTERSON all won U15 100m races and teamed up with CALEB ADENUGA to finish runners up in the sprint relay. Daniel also ran an English School qualifying time in the 200m. SHANE CONNELL and MICHAEL ODEJIMI were again in dominant form in the high jump whilst county champion LUKE CHESTERS was a clear winner in the 800m.
When compared with round one, our performances were better in 50 events and worse in 32 which brought about an improved team total from 542 to 561 points. This is good enough to secure their eighth Northern title but to retain their National title, the team will need to score in the region of 600 points by September.
As ever, thank you to the indispensable team managers, CARL WORTHINGTON and DAVE MARSH; those officials and parents who always make a big difference and to photographers ERNIE GREENWOOD and CARL WORTHINGTON. Ernie’s photos can be viewed and bought at http://www.darkstarphotos.com
