BRITISH SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The country’s best senior athletes descended on Birmingham at the weekend for the Sainsbury’s British Championships. Though Sale Harriers uncharacteristically had no British Champions this year, congratulations to hammer thrower SARAH HOLT who won a silver medal, discus thrower KIRSTY LAW who won a bronze medal and javelin thrower LAURA WHITTINGHAM who also won a bronze medal. Sarah currently sits 2nd on top of the British rankings and Kirsty and Laura both sit 3rd.
It was also a great day for several other club athletes. JENNA HILL was understandably ‘over the moon’ to finish 6th in her first National 1500m final. Just a week after she’d lopped a massive seven seconds off her PB (4:13.24), she ran her 2nd fastest time of 4:18.29 and took a few big name scalps in the process. LIAM GRAY THOMPSON will also be very pleased to record a 400m PB in his heats. Sprinter LUCY EVANS is also ‘really pleased’ to have finished 6th in the 200m
It was so near and yet so far for sprinter ANDY ROBERTSON. In both his heat and final he was powering in the lead until the last few meters to then fade badly to 4th in the final and so missed his ticket to the World championships. Another disappointed club athlete was club’s decathlete ALEX WORT. He went for the individual 100m hurdles but it didn’t turn out quite what he wanted but valued the experience
Club athletes who also valued the experience though disappointed in their performances were:- NAYEF IMAN (100m), UMAR HAMEED (100), ROY EJIAKUEWE (100), AARON CROWLEY (100), DANNY HEALD (200), KELLY MASSEY (400), TOM ATKINSON (800), GABRIEL ODUJOBI (110H), CHRIS BAKER (HJ),, SEUN OKORO (HJ, ANDY SUTCLIFFE (PV), PAUL WALKER (PV), BEN WILLIAMS (TJ), ALEX SMITH (H), NATASHA WILSON (J).
