THE SALE 5K SIZZLER (2)
Fechin Mc Cormick
The 2nd 5k Sizzler in Wythenshawe Park was another scorcher. With an excellent 400 finishers, it was disappointing (but only by my own excessive, personal standards) not to have had closer to 500 finishers. Age-group records continued to fall and on this occasion, we had three new ones. HELEN CLITHEROE, stalwart of the GB team for many years who represented GB on the World XC for 8 consecutive years, smashed LOUISE RUDD’S L40 record set just two weeks earlier, to record a new 16.16 and clock the fastest L40 time in the UK this year. The Sizzlers can now boast at least six of Britain’s fastest age-group times. JEFF NORMAN, Altrincham’s Montreal Olympian, improved Ken Burgess’ M70 record from last year by 14 seconds to set the new mark of 21.03 and record Britain’s 4th fastest M70 time. Rochdale’s BRENDA ROBINSON will also be added to the L70 record list with her time of 29.09.
Forty Sale Harriers took part making an impressive total so far of 94 this year. All but four improved their times over Sizzler 1- very impressive. Two of them, FRANCIS SWEENEY (18.39) and MARTIN SMEDLEY (22.28) were so close (three seconds) it doesn’t really matter and the other two HELEN ARMITAGE (19.34) and TIM RAINEY (24.09) had very good reason in that Helen had just returned from holiday and Tim was pacing a colleague, so every club member had good reason to be satisfied. The club also had several prize winners: - 3rd place M40 GAZ RAVEN (15.24); MATT BEACOCK (16.12) took the U20 prize; GLEN SAVAGE (17.38) the M50 prize, MICHAEL DUNNE (21.02) the M65 prize and JACKIE CORDINGLEY (20.47) won the L55 prize. Well done to them.
If there was one area of improvement, I’d like to see a massive increase in the donations to St. Ann’s Hospice. Again, just less than £400 was raised through their collection buckets on exiting the car-parks and, though great in itself, it quite measly (a) in terms of St. Ann’s needs viz £16,000 a day (b) the numbers who participate in the Sizzler and (c) as an indicator of the level of gratitude people feel leaving the race fit, well and able against those bed-ridden and faced with life-threatening illness.. I’d far sooner see expressions of tangible gratitude for the Sizzlers rather than mere word..

Thanks to LOUISA CANDIOLI and her friend, a large number of photos from the first Sizzler can now be viewed as an album with the Sizzler 1 report. Thanks to club photographer ERNIE GREENWOOD for his photos of this 2nd Sizzler.
Finally, thanks again to all the marshals, officials, those who helped fill 500 goody bags; brought them home for safe-keeping etc etc. Let’s do the same again on Tuesday evening July 21st and Thursday July 23rd.A special thanks again to DUNCAN & BARBARA SHUTTLEWORTH and their Accountancy Business, Topping Associates, who’ve massively improved the goody bags and added immeasurably to the quality and reputation of the Sizzlers
