BIRCHWOOD 10k 2015
A longstanding local race took place in Warrington on August the 23rd 2015, The Birchwood 10k. Storms and heavy rain were predicted but didn’t materialise during the race luckily. It was however quite warm and muggy although this didn’t seem to unduly affect our very own Nigel Martin who managed to win the race with a time of 33:04. As an indication of how tough this race was however his season’s best and pb was at The Trafford 10k where his time of 31:45 only got him 43rd place and over 80 people beat his time of today. Nigel had also won a 5k track race in Doncaster the day before and raced another 5k earlier in the week.
Next Sale Harrier came Andy Mooney who had missed a few training sessions recently and so was a little down on his pb with 37:36. Kevin Foster too had a much slower time than his Trafford 10k with 40:51 (pb at Trafford of 35:44). Frank Cordingley has done many Birchwoods over the years. In 1985 he managed 36:26, 1998 36:06 and in 1996 came 14th with 34:58 (note that the race route has changed since those days). His time today as a vet 50 (nearly 55) was 44:37 which he was pleased with. (pb at Trafford 10k 1991 31:04).
Joanna Robbins vet 40 is preparing for a half marathon and managed 46:23 (pb set in 2012 of 43:28). Geoff Beattie vet 60 who managed 48:42 at The Salford 10k earlier this year did 51:54 in today’s tough conditions. Tony Lythe, another seasoned athlete who has probably done more 10ks than I have had hot dinners, did an admiral 52:28 and was 2nd in the vet 70 category. He did 49:30 last year and I’m pretty sure his lifetime pb would be very impressive. Jackie Cordingley who did 43:29 in The Trafford 10k (It seems that the Trafford is the one to go for, for a good time!) vet 55, came 3rd in her category with a disappointing time of 53:02. (pb 42:18).
