TRAFFORD MEDAL MEET
There were lots of Sale athletes on show for the first Outdoor track event of this year. A typical British spring day keeping everyone guessing with spells of pleasant sunshine breaking through but at times when the cloud cover prevailed there was still a bit of a chill in the air. None of this bothered the likes of Isabelle Burke who ran away with the 1200m Gold medal in 4.08 the second fastest time in the UK this year so far, with fellow Sale athlete Lizzie Hill taking bronze.
The fast improving Sam Heyworth raced well against Yorkshire champion Ethan Hussey and got a PB AND A SILVER only half a second adrift. The sprinters were not to be outdone with 14 PB s gained. A total of 9 athletes in middle distance events took PBs. Field events such as Javelin are on hold over the winter and the jumps are restricted to indoor events such as our open meets. 6 Javelin throwers, who may not yet be specialists, improved their PBs whilst 5 Shot Putters did likewise.
A further 8 athletes in Long jump improved too. Scarlett Whittaker was only 1cm off her High Jump PB. The youngest age group, under 11 athletes, appeared in 20 events and have not been included in the former totals. It’s a great way to start the year and testament to the very good work which is done at Crossford Bridge, Wythenshawe and Sport City. I noticed 8 Sale coaches there, but there could have been more. Let’s not forget the hours they spend helping athletes taking their first tentative steps in this sport.
