YDL U13 & U15 NATIONAL FINAL, BEDFORD
Having already won their 9th Northern title in 10 years, our U13 & 15 boys and girls competed in its 13th successive National Final at Bedford International Stadium. Representing the North of England against Britain’s best teams, including the Scottish and Welsh Champions, gave the clubs U13 & U15 boys and girls their first taste of international competition. The level of competition was extremely high among athletes, many of whom will become British internationals.
Victory went to Southampton with Sale unable to repeat their 2014 victory, finishing a highly creditable 4th. This was a great result from a team that showed tremendous spirit whilst adopting a disciplined and professional approach under the guidance of inspirational team captains RUKA SHONIBARE and SAM EBONINE. The quality of performance was indicated by our medal tally of 25 gold, 17 silver and 7 bronze medals.
Our gold medallists were ABRAHAM FOBIL, (4), SAM EBONINE (2), CHLOE NEWBIGGING (2), SCOTT WOODS (2), CALEB ADENUGA, SOPHIE ASHURST, AMY HASLAM , FANNY OSARUMEN ODENWENGIE, (gold in 75m, silver in 150m and silver in 4 x 100m relay) RUKA SHONIBARE, LAURELLE OBI, LOUIS APPIAH KUBI, MIA LOWNDES, LIZZY TWITE, MACKENA BRADSHAW, RENE GOOSEN, JESS NELSON, THEO UDUOISE, KANE SAVILLE and JOE HERBERT.
This was a great week for ABRAHAM FOBIL as his four victories at Bedford follow on from three more at Trafford on Monday which included a club U13 javelin record of 42m 20cms. We gained most success in the four sprint relays winning three and runners up in the fourth. A special mention to pole-vaulter SOPHIE ASHURST (whose father was the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games Champion) who was third in the National Champions last week and is young enough to defend the YDL title she won this weekend.
Our silver medallists included MIA GIBBONS (2), LOIS McTIFFIN (2), DEVON WEYMONT, PENNY TOWNSEND, TESS Mc HUGH, MELISSA BOOTH, OLIVIA HERRON and JASMINE RICHARSON. A special mention to SAM WORTHINGTON who was third in the long jump, and also competed in three other events. What would we do without him or our other two four-event men – BEN KERSH and LEWIS HINDLE. Our other bronze medallists were RUBY BELL, ISABELLE BURKE, TAYLOR EDWARDS, HERMIONE MASON, PRAISE OWOEYE and BROGAN RUDMAN. With so many of our medallists still at Primary School, we can look forward to continuing success next year. A special mention to SOFIJA DRAGISIC-WOOD for competing in such a diverse range of events and congratulations to JESS SPILSBURY in her PB over 1500m.
A big thanks to all runners and jumpers who helped the club take part in the throwing events. Our lack of specialist throwers cost us dear at this level and something the club will need to address if we are to regain this National title.
It’s impossible to acknowledge everyone but every boy and girl can be proud of what they have achieved and the honour they have brought the club this season. It would, of course, be impossible to achieve this level of success without team managers DAVE MARSH and CARL WORTHINGTON.
Thanks also to the excellent photos taken by Terry Hindle.
