Primary / Young Athletes Section: 6yrs - 16yrs
Sale Harriers Primary sections (i.e. for children age 6 -11) are principally based at the club’s ‘mother’ site of Crossford Bridge, Danefield Road, Sale, M33 7WR. There’s further provision for endurance training at the Wythenshawe Park track (M23 0AB) and through the Community Clubs at Sportscity in East Manchester (M11 3FF). These venues provide varied opportunities for children from six years upwards to receive coaching and to compete in all types of athletic events in a child friendly atmosphere, within groups of their own age band.
During the summer months, all three facilities use their respective outdoor tracks (Sportcity also has an indoor track facility) and are coached in various track and field events. During winter months when children train outside away from the clubhouse, the club emphasises the need to wear reflective bibs for safety reasons. These can be readily purchased at the club’s kit shop at Crossford Bridge. It is advisable to bring extra dry clothing to change into.
On leaving primary school, the children progress into Young Athletes groups (age 12 -17). Those who’ve trained at Crossford Bridge on Sunday and Tuesday can continue to do as usual with an additional Thursday evening training session (7 -8pm). As they progress through secondary school, many will become integrated into the training at Wythenshawe Park and/or Sportcity dependent on their chosen events. However a place is always available to remain at Crossford Bridge in other directions e.g. Group Helpers / Young Coaches / Track Officials, etc.
Training is every Sunday 10:30 until approximately12.00m and on Tuesday 7-8pm, including all school holidays. Your child can participate 3 times at £2 per session to see if they would like to join, after which an annual membership of £30 per annum is payable and renewed annually. The cost of each training session is £1 for members although occasional Sportshall nights during winter at Sale Leisure Centre are £2 per person. Enquiries should be addressed to Graham & Ann Marshall. (0161 973 5559).
SUMMER TRAINING (April –September): In summer at Crossford Bridge, children’s weekly achievements are collated towards various Badge/Certificates.
WINTER TRAINING (October – March): All groups are involved in endurance events e.g. Cross Country running. This involves running out from the club facility and using the Sale Water Park and surrounding areas.
THROUGHOUT THE YEAR: Crossford Bridge hold various events where the children can represent Sale Harriers and also have the opportunity to be selected for various league fixtures. This section also holds Startrack Athletics activity weeks during the school summer holidays.
OPEN MEDAL MEETS: Every summer to mark the achievements of Crossford Bridge youngsters, the section hosts a couple of open medal meetings. These are open to any child under 13 years to allow them to experience the thrill of competition on the track (50m to 800m), long jump and shot put. For entry forms and details for the Y.A. Open meeting each June and The Wilson Y.A. Open medal meeting in July, click on the website Fixture List.
For coaching purposes the Crossford Bridge Young Athletes are divided into colour groups by age and ability. The younger athletes (6 and 7 yrs) start in the Yellow Group. Their progression is then into the Red Group, Green Group, White Group, Purple Group (multi events) or Middle Distance girls and boys. Each group has a team of qualified coaches and helpers.
There is a developing provision for children age 6 – 11 year old at the club’s Wythenshawe Park site and this specializes in endurance training.
Coach David Marsh coaches boys and girls from 8 -14 years on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 -7pm. Fee is £1.
