There were highs and lows for the club’s thirteen athletes who competed in their pinnacle of the winter indoor season, the British Indoor Championships in Sheffield at the weekend.
The highs were certainly the club’s three medallists. Chris Baker, hot from his recent massive British record and club record high jump of 2.36m, was crowed British Champion. Sprinter Andy Robertson will be ecstatic with his 60m PB and silver medal. Hopefully, he’ll have caught the selector’s eye for the Rio Olympics. Andy Sutcliffe, the club’s pole-vault record holder and multi UK medallist, will also be very pleased to secure yet another silver medal.
Some of the disappointments were unfortunates JESS TAYLOR (DNS), DAVE PROCTOR (DNF), MATT CULLEN (NH), CALLUM ROUGHNEEN (DQ) and JACK ANDREW (DQ).

Several club athletes, their coaches, families and back-up teams had every good reason to celebrate from their performances at the weekend’s important England Indoor Championships at Sheffield.
KEVIN METZGER won the U20 triple jump gold and England Champion and he did it in style with a PB that’s finally reached the magical 15.00m. Kevin now also holds the U20 indoor silver and outdoor gold medals and he’s also the EA U17 gold, and bronze outdoor medallist and U17 indoor silver medallist
JONA EFOLOKO became the U17 200m England champion and the U17 60m silver medallist. He’s already got an impressive set of EA medals. He’s the 2015 U17 60m Champion and 200m silver medallist and the 2014 U15 60m and 200m Champion
EMMANUEL ODUBANJO, another of coach KEITH HUNTER’s exciting athletes, won the U17 England triple jump title again with a PB of 14.52. He adds this to last year’s U17 outdoor bronze medal.
RORY KEEN won the U17 400m bronze medal with a 50.64 PB. Though a hurdles specialist with quite some success as a Gtr. Manchester County , Gtr. Manchester Schools and Northern success, this was only his 2nd straight 400m race, the first just a few weeks earlier when he won the Northern Athletics U17 silver medal.
Well done also to the following who produced tremendous PB’s, almost as good if not as good as medals: DANIEL AFOLATA (U17 60m in 7.05), LOUIS APPIAH-KUBI (60m in7.36), MIA LOWNDES (60m in 8.13), MEG Mc HUGH (U17 300m in 41.90) and AIMEE PRATT (800m in 2:18).
The Under 20 men’s triple jump saw Kevin Metzger extend his PB to 15.00 and move to the top of the rankings with his second round jump.

Following the very successful first Sportshall match at Sportcity in mid-December, Sale Harriers U11 boys were again in excellent form at the weekend. This club section now has six athletes selected to represent Greater Manchester in the North West County Championship for the U11's. The athletes selected were,
Hermione Mason, Olivia Buchan, Mackenna Bradshaw, Prince Ayeni, Harry Edmundson and Leonardo Scott.
The Sportshall Arena had its usual lively atmosphere of noise, keen competition and friendly rivalry between the five counties of Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and Merseyside. In a hard fought contest, Greater Manchester finished 2nd in both Girls and Boys events, just pipped by Cheshire, and only just four points in the boys event.
The club athletes now go on to the Greater Manchester County Championships next Sunday where they represent Sale Harriers and medals are up for grabs!
