The Trafford 10k has had a few issues over the years with short measured courses, to sink holes in the road. It has however proved to be a very fast and friendly local event. This year a new date appeared in our calendar. In addition to the usual March event, an autumn race was arranged. The race has often attracted a high calibre of runner such as Philly Bowden, Jess Judd and Samantha Harrison and this year was no exception with a strong field from far and wide.
Sale Harriers had a good attendance with over 20 runners entered. The weather forecast was for heavy rain, but when it would arrive was anyone’s guess. We’d travelled all the way from Urmston, a good 4 miles away and we arrived early. The race starts on a narrow lane with the start gantry an awful long way as I placed myself behind the 47min pacer. The gun went and we gradually increased our pace until we reached the front. By this time the leaders had disappeared over the horizon.
There was a slight head wind for the first 5k up to Dunham. After that we were heading slightly downhill with the wind behind us. The course is a very pleasant meander along traffic free Cheshire lanes with good support from Sale Harriers and Altrincham runners. I was the last Sale runner with 1 mile to go but could see Adam a few hundred meters ahead. Time to push. Result. Over the line 15s before him. Happy with that.
Our first runner over the line, just 16 minutes ahead of me was newcomer Sam Pendril who is still improving gaining a PB with 33:09. Phil Richardson was not far behind with 33:49 his best 10k this year. Rueben Ashton was 5th U20 with 34:16 a slight PB over Altrincham.
Rachael Rozhdestvenskaya was 2nd V35 with 37:38 another PB. Nick Peach was 1st V65 with 40:59 not quite beating his PB of 28:27 from 1986! He is just amazing.
Helen Armitage is enjoying her new age category (V50) and 41:58 put her in 3rd place Jackie Cordingley was also 3rd in her V65 category.
The rain held off and the atmosphere was great as usual. The next Trafford 10k is in March but I believe it is sold out already. I can see why.
